Hi all :)

Newbie here but a frequent flyer who will be rejoining the skys again very soon.

I'm looking at refreshing my carry on luggage to a hard case. Currently looking at the Qantas branded hard cases but just wondering if anyone has any feedback / suggestions? Probably looking at around $120 mark (obviously in this field a $120 price tag is usually a RRP reduced from $250 haha)

Thanks!
Andy

Think you are right about never paying full retail on luggage. Can't help with suggestions, I am leisure only travel and prefer backpack style

@Andy Travels looking at @Denali link above I would also recommend you consider what you will use the carry on for and how you will use it. Hard side carry on are good bits of kit but most are clam shell design and can be problematic a security. I have 2 set ups one for International, hard side + back pack with all the cough I will need to pull out out at the x-ray being in the back pack. If just domestic I do not use a backpack and I use a slightly smaller 2 wheel soft side that has front entry and it easy to get suff out of when going through security.

Bought a Qantas-branded mid-size case back in 2019. Of course it hasn't seen a lot of use since! Probably the only thing I don't like is than when it opens out it is literally 2 halves, both contained by a full zippered mesh. Pretty common to all hard cases I suppose. Still, something to consider.
As to cost, can't remember, but thought it OK at the time. Try Bagworld (not a product plug) online to review every bag known to man; their Sale prices are good too.

Hi and welcome, Andy. 15 years ago, I bought an "Australian Luggage Co." hard carry-on case, and it has been terrific. No problems at all. It was marked down, to about $75 I think. And it is red!! You can't miss it, which was just what I wanted. 😁

Have to agree with RB (post #2). Backpack is the way to go. No help i realise as you are looking for a hard-case, but yes be mindful a rigid case might not fit on some types of plane.

Hi and welcome to AFF

Last carry on hard case I bought at a 2 dollar shop for about $35. Still going strong. I'm not fussed about brand name products
I’m with you? I bought a $10 or $15 hard shell carry-on from Red Dot in Hobart to carry home cans of local beer for my son! It’s still going strong. Even if it wasn’t, five new carry-on cases will outlast one brand name one from luggage stores.

Since 2013 I have switched to backpack cabin bag. I go for a design that has 4 different zippered sections which gives me a) Laptop and cables section. b) Clothes c) Liquids & d) Passport, paperwork. Depending on which part of the process I'm at I can go directly to what I need.

Aircraft you fly on might be a consideration. If you fly on Qantas Dash 8's you might want to consider a smaller hard case as the standard size doesn't fit in the overhead!

That can always be avoided with a Premium Bag tag. Case is collectable as soon as you deplane. This from someone who has done ~200 flights on the Dash 8. I also take a Back pack for laptop etc which fits easily in the the planes' smaller overhead bins. I can stay away for a week with this combo with the hardcase being a Samsonite. Weighs bugger all empty.

What is considered Premium bag tag. I think I have a Silver and a Gold bag tag. I have a Dash8 next week ROK-BNE

It's a 2 part paper tag, one goes on bag and the other is your ID to collect which is never asked for. Ask for it at either check in or at the desk where you scan boarding pass before boarding. Drop it on the tarmac near stairs to plane and the baggage handlers will load it. It's then returned to same spot when you arrive at the other end. So essentially travelling with HLO and can pack heaps. Then if you get a B717 or something home you can take on as normal.

Oh ok, I understand now, sorry I thought you were referring to the bag tags issued depending on your status. Yes B717 up and Dash8 home
