Bonza Airline Discussion

it’s a bit of trial and error until they perhaps find some solid routes.
How much cash have they got to burn in the meantime? JetGo churned through quite a few routes hoping to find the "solid" ones. Might as well have been looking for a unicorn.
Compass Mk I and Mk 11 for starters
JetGo could not do it with 30-50 seat Embraers. And Bonza wants to do it with an aircraft that the full service airlines configure for 160 seats approx incl J. If all Y it will be more seats.
Even Rex with the tiny Saabs often has very empty flights but their operating costs are very low.
Tim Tams don’t pass that test!
Vegemite 100% and Zooper dooper AOAO
4n20, Herbert Adams AOAO but for a budget airline - pies would be an expensive offering
Violet crumble AOAO
Anything Arnotts out including Sao
Anything Cadbury out - including Cherry ripe, caramelo koala
Sara lee out
Even Cottees is out. So no Cottees cordial

But there are plenty of Regional producers of snacks and foods.
Snowycookies.com.au is one but it has a contract with QF

Interesting that Bonza's Canadian equivalent (similar investment and leases from 777 Partners)
Is being investigated for not being sufficiently Canadian owner (Aus has much looser restriction as long as Bonza doesn't fly overseas, ergo Rex and the initial Singapore owned Tiger)

or VA 1.0 and VA 2.0.

Even VA 1.0 were able to structure themselves in a way that international operations were, on paper, Australian owned.

Edit: If we go back to the beginning, VB was wholly owned by Branson/Virgin Group at the start of operations before they started selling down to Toll :)

And if we go way back, AN International (under the ownership of NZ - in turn NZ themselves part owned by SQ and Majority-owned by Brierley).

ANi was divided to 51% Australian "ownership", with the 49% owned by NZ.

Things are very quiet on the Bonza front at the moment.

I see they have stopped all social/marketing as of late April. First aircraft was meant to be here early May during his interviews at the start of the year. Nothing on the Boeing production line at the moment.

With no crews hired or commenced training yet, seems like July isn’t going to happen. Looks more September-December. I remember when Tiger commenced in 2007, it took all hired Cabin Crew and Pilots to Singapore for 4 weeks of famil training, including CASA who went along to assess standards. They did all this in August, then commenced operations November. AOC proving flight does not happen overnight, that’s at least a month in the planning.

Maybe waiting for the demise of Rex?

Interesting observations.

Maybe they are looking at the Rexy v VA2 dogfight going on and thinking twice about entering the fray....

Not much of a dog fight..... The pax loads say it's a cough cat vs lion kinda fight.

Beat me to it. I was going to suggest a cat toying with a mouse. With the dog watching on from the side lines, occassionally being provoked by the mouses' constant squeaking.

Bonza posted an update today on its Facebook page. Apparently their first aircraft is taking a little longer to arrive than first expected.

I wonder if this is due to recent delays in Boeing delivering new aircraft?

At this stage Bonza is telling people not to expect them to be flying before September.

The delays will be CASA. It was easier for Rex to get 737 approval as they are already familiar with the operation. Tiger in 2007 had a Singapore Operation to show the regulator, I was reading elsewhere that all crews and even CASA spent months in Singapore prior to launch. That will assist with the approval process.

Bonza has nothing but an executive team. I was also reading that it’s flight crews including pilots and training department, is outsourced to a business called CAE. Perhaps the pilots oh here could comment, however outsourcing the entire flight and training departments surely will be a challenging thing to do for a new AOC?

It was kind of expected that this will happen once the tranche of press releases from Bonza started to gradually slow down to a halt.

I agree it's more likely to do with the delays of Bonza's application for their AOC rather than the "aircraft delays" being displayed on Bonza's press release. A mid year date was always going to be optimistic, even for a PE backed proposed start up.
