Hey Guys,

I am taking Mum to melbourne for 2 days in september and we need a cheap place to stay in MEL (prefer the city or close to it) in case dates and all that matter here are the details:

Friday, September 3rd:

QF5702 HBA-MEL
Op. by JQ:shock:

(**Shudders**) but there were no award seats on the QF flight and I want to use up all my points before I switch everything to DJ.

Saturday, September 4th:

DJ1332 MEL-HBA
Op. by Virgin Blue:D

So its just one friday night essentially, oh and Mum won't stay anywhere that has shared bathrooms and it has to be reasonably clean, and the following hotels are on the never again list:

Easystay @ the bayside
Hotel Enterprize

That all taken into account, what can the AFFer's recommend to me;)

I've always found The Mirvac Citigate Albert Park to be a reasonable set of digs if travelling on a budget. 4 1/2 star, within 5-7min tram ride of city, straight past Flinders Street, NGV, and Federation Square.

Tram stop is a 2min walk up the road and frequency is brilliant as it's on the route to St Kilda and everything else going down that way.

QF Hotels site is offering AUD169 for a twin, same on hotel's own site.

My preferred hotel for cheap stays in Melbourne would be Hotel Formule1 - 2 star.

You get a clean bed with a bathroom - shower and sink only.

I'm getting public rates of $69 on the booking website.

Skybus will take you right there from Spencer Street on their free hotel transfer.

I believe 24 hour Coles is right down the street too if you need anything anytime.

Hi Josh,

Travelodge Southbank is showing 21 day advance purchase rates (non-refundable) of $119.00 Standard Queen or Twin Bed rooms for September 3rd. Haven't actually stayed here myself so can't make comment on the hotel. However, I can recommend it's location - Southbank shops / restaurants; the Arts Centre; Crown Casino & Melbourne CBD, all withing walking distance of the hotel. Note also that September is AFL football finals time, so booking well in advance is recommended!
Standard Room - Twin Beds

Individually controlled air conditioning, ensuite bathroom with a large well lit vanity mirror, kitchenette with a microwave, tea and coffee making facilities. TV with radio, Foxtel and movie channels.
AUD 119.25

Advance Purchase 21 - Standard Twin

Purchase your room 21 days before your arrival to receive a discounted rate. Room must be pre-paid at time of booking, and is non-refundable.

Guarantee Policy: A deposit at the time of booking is required for this rate.
Cancellation Policy: This rate is non refundable and non changeable. Cancellation fee is equal to cost of 100.00 percent of total stay booked.
Deposit Policy: A non refundable deposit at the time of booking is required for this rate. Required deposit is equal to cost of 100.00 percent of total stay booked.
General Payment Policy: Bookings prepaid online via the Advanced Purchase packages do not incur a 1.5% credit card transaction fee.

Cheers,

Iza.

Thanks for the input so far, does anyone know of any deals that are going ATM on sites like hotelclub and such, similar to the ones in 2008 where you get a $50 credit when you signup.

Something like that would be helpful. Oh and if it would help the price at all I will have (hoping) about 800 A-club points credited in a few days:mrgreen:

Cheers,

Josh:p

My cheap-but-cheerful MEL choice the last few times has been 'The Albany' South Yarra. They have some very reasonable rates and the hotel is located right amongst some beautiful parks and a 10-min tram ride to the city.

Re: Travelodge southbank, haven't stayed there personally but know several who have and haven't heard a bad thing!

The travelodge at southbank is fine. I have discovered a little gem in the City Edge apartments on Elizabeth street. I have booked Spring carnival week this year for a one bedroom apartment for $125 per night. Stayed there last year for the same period when it had just opened and got a $99 per night deal.

+1 to this - exactly my thought.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Last time I stayed in Melbourne it was at the Pensione Boutique Hotel, 16 Spencer Street Melbourne.

Historic hotel that has been renovated.Small but new rooms with flat screen and new bathroom. Was a little bit noisy (walls are a bit thin and had some people arguing in the hall at 2am, but I guess that could happen at any hotel).

At $110 per night it ticked the boxes - new, CBD location, cheap (for business travel anyway).

Also stayed at Batmans Hill (cnr Collins & Spencer) nice but $160/night, and the others I have stayed at recently were all no better than either Pansione and Batmans Hill, but all $150+/night.

Ok I think I have found one:

Rydges on Swanston, Its only $99 per room per night on hotelclub A.T.M

Anyone had any experience with this hotel and how far is it from the city (easy access to trams etc.)

It looks luxurious enough, and Mum would just love it;)

Not too far from the city but at the northern end. Trams will go right past the front door. About 7-8 minutes walk to Melbourne Central shopping centre and train station.

What's In The Area

  • Melbourne University - 100m
  • Lygon Street - 300 m
  • Melbounre Central - 1 km
  • Melbourne Zoo - 1 km
  • Draculas Cabaret Restaurant - 300m
  • City Circle Tram - 1 km

Have walked past it, not too far from the city and looked nice enough from the outside.

Although i did see a few...unsavoury businesses near it operating while I was walking past one night.
