Hi all!

I was an Ansett Flight Attendant for 14 years and despite intense research I cannot recall the name Ansett gave the 4th class of domestic travel in the May of 1991. Was hopeful someone may know? It was a few rows at the back and it was a discounted fare without a full meal…fingers crossed! Australian also introduced it....

Welcome to AFF Nathan :). I don't know the answer either, but I think we might have some fun with this.

The irony is that I have it in memorabilia in storage and I am kicking myself. Some people are calling it Discount Economy yet Ansett branded it as did TN...thanks for the message. Great to be here. Awesome site!!

Oh, sorry! Welcome to AFF Ethan. You can see why I couldn't help with a question from 1991.

Didn't they introduce a product called 'Business First'?

From memory it was introduced after F was removed and J was upgraded to the 'Business First'

Yes we did at Ansett International and then Domestic followed....spot on!

There was a period aound the late 80's early 90's when there were several different levels of economy service depending on the fare paid.

One would get full service, the second got partial service. This went down to little/no service.

Both Qantas and Ansett had this domestically for a short period.

I can't recall the names used for the levels.

I do recall TN launching a "no frills" product on A300's which was a fixed section at the back, you got a checked bag but not much else. Caused some rankles on Perth services where the "frills" passengers got full meals whilst behind not nothing except a drink ( tea/coffee) and a maybe a croissant .
up front I think TN dabbled in something called "premier or Premium"/club, based on euro J and ECY.
A good read is Contested Skies by John Gunn covers the TN history from start until after the merger with QF. Bit of a dry read but for plane buffs worthwhile.

that is correct! I have a nice big glossy brochure launching this concept... complete with tracing paper inserts to overlay on a drawing of the cabin to show how the new classes work!

You guys are amazing. Yes it was in the May of 1991. The last few rows know on AN as "D Zone" - it was an unmitigated disaster. Chicken drum sticks and sausage sandwiches...! The journey continues. I may find Harold Holt first!
