Yes, I'm serious. Last year she was hit by a car while cycling. She underwent major back surgery and now sports a part-titanium spine. She's making a good recovery but she (and we) travel a fair bit for work and leisure overseas. I'm reaching out to the AFF community as a long term admirer of your FF skills, tips and vast experience.
Shortly we're travelling to the north west Pacific for a friend's wedding. Given my wife's back condition we're going business for a personal flight - first time ever (QF 2-for-1 discount fare). But we'd been hoping for a while to get to London this year where I have family. My wife has work-related commitments, so her flight cost is covered. So my dilemma is how to join her in the same cabin!
I'm gold QFF, my wife is platinum QFF. She has 270k QFF points; I have 20k. Our flight dates are 24 Sept 2018 ex-MEL in and out of London, returning 10 Oct. Her work travel policy requires 'best fare of the day' so it prob won't be a QF (some discretion permitted, eg. avoid multiple stopovers). She can propose fares & we can top up if need be. Any suggestions / thoughts?

If you are looking at award flights, flexibility in dates/airlines is required if you are looking to get to LHR in J.

Due to the work commitments, there isn't much date flexibility I'm afraid. The first work meeting is 26 Sept. I have a work commitment back in Melb on 12 Oct.

As a Qf Plat, your wife can request for a J classic award seat to be released to / from Lhr by ringing QF up...TF all your pts to her account.

Are pretty much the closest comments to define mutually exclusive that I've ever read when trying to redeem points. You can just buy a fare once her employer decides....

Thanks - that's great to know and great suggestion. She'd need to be able to book Qantas at 'best fare of the day' rate (work requirement). We can look into possibility of paying fare difference (not sure yet).

This is your best plan. So transfer your points to her and check on Award flights. As WP and as previously stated she can call and request a seat be released but only on Qantas flights. If your wife can negotiate to pay the fair difference for herself - and if it’s a work requirement that she fly and she has a medical condition then I think she has a good case for this esp if she is prepared to pay the difference out of her own pocket.

Welcome

Have you considered travelling on different flights/airlines?

Echoing comments re needing flexibility for a J class award

Also consider awards in and/or out of EU destinations (typically on EK) with a paid short haul fare to LHR. Think BCN/MAD/MUC etc

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Your wife needs to fly J and her work will pay her to fly J.

You do not need to fly J. Fly Y on the same flight if a J points redemption is not possible.

The OP’s ‘dilema’ Is how to join her in the same cabin’ as previously posted.
