Hi all,
This is a complicated post, so hopefully I can tap into somebody's expertise on routing and business class upgrades! I am currently a Silver member on both Enrich and Velocity (yes, odd program combination I know!) due to some travel to Malaysia a while ago. I currently have about 200k Velocity Points, and approx 100k Enrich points.
My question is: what is the best route from Sydney to London that I should be taking to maximise point usage, whilst getting a business-class (or similar) fare? A business-class fare would have better weight allowances, which would be highly helpful for me moving overseas. I am looking to move from Sydney to London around June / July this year, with a return in December (Christmas) to visit family, then flying back to London to continue my life in the UK.
I can only think of the following:
Option 1 - coughbersome split between two carriers:
Buy Economy Flex on Virgin: SYD -> HKT (via PER): Upgrade using Velocity points to Business (29k points) - however, luggage allowance is Low, and I hear the flight is on a narrow-body 737, not an A330?
Buy Economy Flex on Malaysia Airlines: HKT -> KUL -> LHR. Upgrade using Enrich points to Business (45k points one-way)
Option 2 - one carrier only: MAS
Buy Economy Flex on SYD -> KUL -> LHR, and upgrade only the KUL to LHR legs (45k Enrich points). However, I would then have to buy 'extra' luggage on my economy trip from SYD to KUL.
Does anyone know a better way that would use up Velocity Points (which may expire?) that gets me into a more comfortable business-class fare, given the long flight time?
Open for better suggestions. Other things to consider:
- Doing some status-run trips in AU to build up Velocity SCs, so that international long haul upgrades can be an option. My review date is Sept 2013.
- Booking a one way flight only, then book a separate a return flight from LHR -> SYD -> LHR, given that I don't know when I'll be back in Sydney...
- OneWorld - can I use Enrich miles to upgrade business class on other OneWorld carriers...?
Any reply greatly appreciated, as I know that the above post is rather complicated.
