I've 380K points with VA - Occasionally I've looked at booking a Europe return trip for myself and partner, but the rate of spend for points seems to be pretty bad. Upgrades with points aren't an option because they're not VA operated flights (right?)

Is there a way to book Melbourne—Central Europe return flights using VA points that is point cost effective?

1) If you have a proposed itinerary and potential dates you'd like to observe, post it here so we can all look for you.
2) Wait for May, there's supposed to be some significant promotion coming up......

Say I wanted to be in Europe for around 3 weeks around Christmas time, back in MEL either in time for NYE, or a few days after.

Good to hear about the May promotion, I'll keep my eyes peeled

A lot of effective options. I literally detailed my experience doing as such yesterday in this thread: Experience Booking Europe Trip with Velocity Points
I thought I got a bargain! So not sure what 'pretty bad' is?

MEL-HKG-MEL in J and purchase a connection into Europe? It's a shame the VA777s aren't flying to AUH anymore, I redeemed a fair share of points on upgrades and to me it always represented good value (everyone's interpretation is different). Travelislife have detailed their efforts; I also booked SQ via VA transfer and while it cost me slightly more, I was happy with the value.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thanks for sharing your post. I did some brief searches today for economy return (2 passengers), the point quote was over 400K with about $1,000 in fees. Clearly something went wrong there.

Are you sure you weren't looking at VA's 'any seat' rewards?

That's probably the case. I've only used points once (called on the phone, didn't have travel specifics, booked business class Europe return for a few months ahead), so I honestly don't have much of a clue at this point.

I'll search again later and pay more attention to it - I definitely suffered from sticker shock when I looked this morning!

Have a look here for the points values: https://www.velocityfrequentflyer.com/content/Redeem/Airlines/PointsTables/

Melbourne to London (and most of Europe) on SQ is 75,000 points in economy or 139,000 points in business class one way.

So for 2 adults return in economy you are looking at a fixed 300,000 points. Or in business class a fixed 556,000 points. Plus about $200 per person in taxes. More if flying out of LHR on the return.
