I have seen recently several airlines to offer mixed class airfares AUS-EU for around 5500 AUD.
But if one buys a return economy from AUS to say KUL/BKK/DPS/etc. (flying Emirates for 850 AUD or Air Asia much cheaper, Jetstar...?) and then business class teturn from there to EU then the total cost comes down to around 3500 AUD. For example return business KUL-FCO (Rome) flying Kuwait Air is about 2100 US$ (coud use Eva Air, Qatar, ...at similar cost). And that is the high season/ Xmas. Any comments? :?::?::?:

if you find a fare you like with an airline that you like, then go for it

The only thing I would do is put an overnight stop in Asia since if you miss the connection , you have no protection and may be up for the full price of a new ticket. Put an overnight stop in and you have enough leeway to be able to handle issues

I wouldn't bother with an overnight stop if it was the same plane continuing on, in that case the risks of misconnect are minimal. (ie purchasing a flight in economy from MEL and then a separate business class ticket from Asia on the same plane). The examples being - assuming PIN is travelling ex-MEL would be QF9 MEL-SIN, then SIN-LHR; and EK405, then SIN-DXB-Europe (and QF 10/EK404 in the other direction). In fact on Emirates to London you can do this very trip at the moment for $3700 AUD - depending on dates of travel.

Ya, a same aeroplane connection would be fine to me too. Have done them myself on turnarounds in Europe. If it is not continuation on the same aeroplane, then I always put an overnight in

then I always put an overnight in

Doesn't always have to be an overnight, you could theoretically arrive in SIN at 6am and fly out to Europe at 11pm and be OK but it would be a long long day!

On some airlines (probably QF, SQ) it may be OK for tighter same carrier connections on difft tickets - they'd probably move you to a later flight without penalty , and worst case you're up for a nights accom at your own expense, but one things for sure I wouldn't risk it if I'm going anywhere near a LCC.

Which is why I go for and recommend an overnight. More civilised than just a v long day. I agree that there are other options but , to me, they tend to be a lot less palatable

Doable.

Only comment is that i would avoid Kuwait Air. Dry airline and product that is way behind other carriers. Unless they have had a complete cabin refurb recently their business class is pretty old.

I'd go for Qatar if it is aroundthe same price.

Also as noted in another thread here on AFF - Royal Jordanian was quoted with biz class ex Hong Kong for about AUD3500. That would be a good option, although they have the same seats as AA international (angled lie flats) - but the service and food was great when i flew with them two years ago.

Agree, their economy is not much good but business is not so bad and if BYO then one can survive OK.

Royal Brunei are very good and allow BYO. But they do not fly SYD-FRA anymore, just PER/BNE-LHR. They business class is very good value for money. PIN

For my Europe trips my carrier of choice atm is Emirates in 1st class at around $7000. V nice and not too bad a price when buying Europe-Australia r/t rather than AU-Australia. Not being one who drinks alcohol these days, my main concern on drinks is that they have plenty of sparkling water :)

That's ok, I am not there for alcohol. EK are good - I am a member and their business class was very good. Yes, it is much cheaper to buy tickets "in reverse", EU-AUS. One can buy bus MPS-MEL on Etihad for under 4kAUD return. I just bought IST-MEL around Xmas one way bus for equv. 2100 AUD.

I'm looking at a Mixed Fare to Frankfurt in September, and I'm looking for advice in comparing Business Class with Finnair or Royal Jordanian. Finnair is about $450 AUD more. I want the OW SC's. I'm happy to fly out of anywhere, however BKK seems to offer the best value. HK would be my preference though.

Any advice?
