American now denying OneWorld Sapphire/Emerald members lounge access on domestic itineraries? - One Mile at a Time

The wording for lounge access on the oneworld website has been altered:

American Airlines AAdvantage® members and oneworld top tier status holders, regardless of their tier status, cannot access lounges when travelling solely on North American itineraries within or between the U.S., Canada, Mexico (except Mexico City), the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Caribbean.

Source: Lounge access - oneworld

Not good if booking separate fares in the US.

Hopefully a typo. But a nasty change if true.

Might be time to find my lt qantas club card...

No Plat or Gold for QF in US domestic Admirals Lounge ?

American now denying OneWorld Sapphire/Emerald members lounge access on domestic itineraries? - One Mile at a Time

At least that was the policy up until now, as the verbiage on the OneWorld website has just changed:

American Airlines AAdvantage® members and oneworld top tier status holders, regardless of their tier status, cannot access lounges when travelling solely on North American itineraries within or between the U.S., Canada, Mexico (except Mexico City), the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Caribbean.

Previously just AAdvantage members were excluded from accessing lounges on itineraries within the US, so the “oneworld top tier status holders” verbiage is new.

I also asked this question on a FT thread (not many replies as at this post's timestamp):
If this change holds true, that's a downer.

On the other hand, Qantas Club paid membership grants access to AA lounges (except Flagships) when flying AA. I assume this will not change?

Then, just to make things more confusing, Qantas Gold and Platinum members are technically also Qantas Club members (we get our membership for free, as it were). Does this effectively render QF Golds and Platinums immune from these changes?

If it is true it won't affect most antipodean travellers as as most intineries would be "international" (no mention of same day).

However, this post seems to indicate is is a mistake and the "top tier" reference applies to AAdvantage elites only:

I believe that the American Airlines AAdvantage in the paragraph below applies to both members and one world top tier status in the first sentence.

American Airlines AAdvantage® members and oneworld top tier status holders, regardless of their tier status, cannot access lounges when travelling solely on North American itineraries within or between the U.S., Canada, Mexico (except Mexico City), the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Caribbean.

Re: No Plat or Gold for QF in US domestic Admirals Lounge ?

Seems more aimed at the FL rather than AC.

At the American Airlines Flagship Lounge®, you can get away from the busy terminal and enjoy a little peace and quiet before your flight. Complimentary access to the American Airlines Flagship Lounge is extended if you meet one of the following criteria:

  • First Class on an American Airlines marketed and operated international* flight
  • Full-fare in the First Class cabin (F and Z inventories) on an American Airlines marketed and operated three-class nonstop transcontinental flight
  • American Airlines AAdvantage Executive Platinum® customers on an international* flight, operated and marketed by a oneworld® airline, regardless of cabin flown
  • oneworld First Class international* customers when departing on or connecting to a oneworld marketed and operated flight
  • oneworld Emerald customers** when departing on or connecting to any oneworld marketed and operated flight, regardless of cabin flown. Access is valid on a same day itinerary that includes an international* qualifying segment

*For the purpose of Flagship Lounge access, eligible international cities include flights traveling to or from Europe, Asia, Central and South America and Mexico City only. All other international destinations are excluded from the benefit of lounge access.
**American Airlines AAdvantage Executive Platinum/Emerald customers traveling on solely North American itineraries do not qualify for Flagship Lounge access. North America is defined as U.S. (including Hawaii and Alaska), Canada, Mexico (except Mexico City), Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

Admirals Club Locations And Pass Information

oneworld Emerald or Sapphire Members of oneworld airline frequent flyer programs with the equivalent of oneworld Emerald or Sapphire status can use any lounge offered by any oneworld airline when departing on any flight marketed and operated by any oneworld member airline*, no matter in which cabin class they are flying (* oneworld flights do not include codeshare flights with non-oneworld airlines, even those marketed by a oneworld Member but operated by a non-oneworld carrier or those operated by a oneworld Member but marketed by a non-oneworld carrier)

  • Emerald tier frequent flyers can use First Class, Business Class or frequent flyer lounges
  • Sapphire tier frequent flyers are welcome in Business Class* or frequent flyer lounges
  • As an Emerald or Sapphire member, your lounge access is regardless of which cabin you are flying in
  • Emerald and Sapphire members may invite one guest to join them in the lounge
  • You must be prepared to show your frequent flyer membership card, with oneworld Emerald or Sapphire status, to access a lounge
  • Access to First Class lounges is restricted to passengers flying in the lounge operator's First Class cabin or to cardholders with oneworld Emerald status, regardless of which oneworld airline or cabin they are flying
The following exceptions apply:

  1. American Airlines and Qantas offer programs enabling travelers to pay to gain access to their lounges. These programs are not part of the oneworld agreement, and members of these programs are not entitled to access lounges under the oneworld agreement
  2. American Airlines AAdvantage® members, regardless of their tier status, cannot access lounges when travelling on North American itineraries within or between the U.S., Canada, Mexico (except Mexico City), the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Caribbean
  3. Qantas Frequent Flyer Gold members cannot access Qantas Domestic Business Lounges

However, BA, AA and QF are all partner airlines, and hence lounge partner. I thought that partner agreement was separate to the oneworld agreement. Would lounge access be separate and still be available as part of the partner thing?

AFAIK yes, QP membership gets the reciprocal rights with AA and BA and likewise for paid memberships with AA/BA. which is all seperate to the OW agreement

Good reason to remain WP QP member then....

How do you remain WP QP?
I know I have residual left from a few years ago ....

Gold, Platinum and higher members are QP members by default.

Try and join the QP online and you'll get:

Qantas said:
As a Gold or Platinum member you receive complimentary Qantas Club membership.

Oh my goodness, this thread has ruined my lunchbreak
Now my blood pressure has calmed down a bit I'm remaining hopeful that it's poor proof reading and a way of AA preventing dual elites ( AA and other OW) from accessing AC or Flagship lounges.
Fingers crossed or we might have to have a Flagship Lounge Wake Tour ;)

or DJ WP and fly DL :p

DJ WP on DL will *only* get you lounge access though, nothing else (no baggage/security/check in priority).

Reading more into it and reading OneMileatatime blog, I am wondering whether passengers are using their oneworld status on one airline to access the lounge but crediting the points to American Airlines. Not that anyone should be doing that.

I hope the change doesn't affect Qantas Club members but looks like there is some tightening of the rules.
