He looked keen in the photos .. but that is basically the article ... little else is mentioned ...

I think that this could happen anywhere.

Ryanair have a fee for using the aerobridge don't they? That is using it when connected to an actual Ryanair plane. Smart chap - saved himself 10 quid :p

Perhaps anywhere that has security as lax as Spain however I would be surprised to see such an occurrence in Australia. I can't believe staff in MAD didn't close the door to the aerobridge when they closed boarding otherwise how else was the pax able to gain access to the aerobridge and tarmac?

Interested in the basis for your statement that security is lax in Spain.
That certainly hasn't been my impression.

Sort of hilarious...what was going through his mind? "The aircraft will stop, the door will open, and they'll hoist me on board.."

I wonder what planet that happens on?

Why would the pilot let the person on the plane? Surely it would be a security issue.

Having recently flown from this airport on the same airline, I noticed that 2 separate gates had the doors open with staff not in attendance in the vicinity. Also when it came time to board , we were using a remote gate where a bus would take us to the aircraft . there were no staff at the bottom of the stairs from the terminal, only the bus driver sitting in his seat – reading his news paper. There would have been nothing to stop me walking into the baggage processing area or around the tarmac if I wanted.

Might be the airline then. Especially if it's at the gate where they have most control. I've flown in and out of and through Madrid and always found the security quite tight.
Never with that airline though.

My experience was in T1. The gates i noticed unattended were other LCC operators

What are the security implications?
Seems more of a safety issue IMO.
Similar breach could happen at any airport with boarding by stairs, for example.

Huge security breach having a random person unescorted on the tarmac.
He might have been scanned and not have any dangerous items on him but there are a hundred dangerous items waiting on the apron.
If a passenger ran off while queueing to board by stairs the same risks would apply.

If he was in fact a security risk, I'd rather have him loose on the tarmac searching for a makeshift weapon than on board doing the same.

Yes, that was exactly my point.

Obviously they expect PAX to be roaming around on board, so there is nothing dangerous to find in the cabin.
