Howdy folks, im not sure what the rules here so ill be careful, Im feeling quite good about myself , Have i discovered a loop hole or is it common knowledge

im assuming taxes for emirates are generally high, and around $1200-$1600,
however I ve read on another site that if I go through a particular airport, due to their laws, the taxes come out to $300, so I have to go through that airport to save myself $1000

However i have to book through qantas and do 2 separate bookings,
im finding it strange that if I book it as one single booking the taxes goes back up to $1200-$1600,

is the qantas site playing games or am I missing a crucial rule?

I think I know which country/s you're talking about. The booking would need to originate in (not transit through) that country to get the lower taxes.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

you're probably right,
is it taboo or unrecommended to mention the site or country?

And the other key is not to depart from APD airports in the UK.

Basically you need to depart from Scotland, Northern Ireland or Europe.

Just experienced this myself trying to get a 1 way F booking out of the UK back to Perth.

I checked 3 different airports and the prices varied from $1500 - $2200. A big difference.

FWIW I've just booked / ticketed 2 x QFF awards for the following ..... all up the charges/taxes/CC fee = $1,477.42 or $738.71 pp

BNE-SYD QF J
SYD-HND QF J
HND-LHR JL F
CDG-HKG CX F
HKG-BNE CX J

Did you do this online or did you call up? And was it 2 one way tickets you booked?

$700 per person return with stop at LHR seems not possible, I thought $1300 minimum;)
I hope im wrong

No, I don't think so. You'll probably find references to Hong Kong and Manila scattered around the forums...

The other place is Brazil but probably not relevant to a discussion about Europe unless the OP has time and points to burn.

I was once booked to go from GIG - SYD in EK F for only $100 in taxes before my plans changed and I had to cancel. I'm still miffed I never got to experience the 2 x 14 hour journeys broken up by a 12 hour Dubai connect stopover at one of any number of 5 star joints in that town, complete with meals. Best use of a gorilla I'd ever seen.

Well I didn't get down to $700, but I certainly booked and ticketed for $738.71pp .... as posted above.

Out of LHR = extra $$$$
Not into.
Flying out of CDG gets around the hefty LHR APD charges

Fair Dinkum!

I WISH people would stop using the bucket term "Taxes" when referring to taxes, levies and surcharges in the cost of an airline booking.

The first two are compulsory, being mandated by governments/airports/etc. . They generally cannot be varied for the same city pair and travel class.

The latter refers to impositions by airlines to increase their revenue; the most common example being Fuel Surcharges or "YQ" or "Fuel Fines".

For Hong Kong and Manilla these fuel surcharges can be illegal (Brazil is another example).

[/RANT OFF]

This thread is mainly about reducing these Fuel Surcharges; it irks me when people use the term "taxes" when they are actually referring to airline impositions. (UK APD is another matter)
