Malaysia Airlines starting 01NOV13 resumes Kuala Lumpur – Darwin operation, offering 5 weekly flights on board Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Reservation for this route opened this week. MH253 KUL2235 – 0510+1DRW 738 x24

MAS last operated service to Darwin on scheduled basis in February 2002.

Good to see DRW getting back some full service airlines such as PR/MI/MH instead of a JQ monopoly after GA/BI/TR pulled out.

Is DRW getting so many pax/traffic now? This new flight doesn't really connect to any major cities (perhaps ADL works), so MH would really need to rely on end-to-end traffic, I think?

It would be worth looking at the fares ex DRW compared to those from southern capitals as it may be a lot cheaper to puchase a sector fare/award travel/free Amex ticket to DRW & do your travel as an open jaw eg DRW/KUL/xx_/KUL/BNE.

One benefit of an early departure ex DRW is a same day connection to many MH destinations. If you depart late pm ex Aust you arrive early evening into KUL so you'd probably need an overnight in KUL anyway prior to flying to your final destination.

DRW now joins CNS as Australian ports served by international One World carriers that don't have QFi flights. Fares will be interesting given the locals are used to $99 specials to SIN.

I noticed this a couple days back, holding out for a opening special from my oneway to DRW in late November, fares aren't too pretty atm. Currently it is showing up as an A330 service which is clearly wrong. With the Qantas club opened 0500-0700, there will be barely any time to lounge before a 0600 departure, given it has a J service, hopefully an arrangement will be made.

Might not have the low prices off the LCCs but will certainly produce a better selection of fares through to Europe and elsewhere for the locals.
