We're off to the UK in late April, (not for the wedding on the 29th) Have flown Qantas J class a number of time so know what to expect, my travel dates are unfortunately not flexible, Qantas are currently asking for $7600 and Malaysia airlines $5400. MH operate 772 and 744 and QF 332 and A380 ( not overly impressed with the 380 J class, found service lacking due too many paxs) however I could fly PER-HGK-LHR on A332 then 744. So my question, is QF worth the extra $2200, I believe MH 772 are pretty old aircraft? Anyone flown MH J?

Hope someone can help.

For what it's worth MH is rated by Skytrax at 5 stars whilst QF is only 4.

Unfortunately I can't comment specifically on the MH J experience.

Malaysian will be a little better product when compared to the Qantas offering. For me though, I would be checking out the Thai Airways option. From/To Perth, the connections are excellent using a A330/B747 combo. Price should be similar to MH.

In fact Thai Airways in April, 2011 - $5480 return

I'd take QF over MH anyway.... But that is quite a price gap, we all know QF don't have to discount to fill their J.

MH food is pretty average as a watch out regardless.

The MH 777's are between 6-13 years old, so not that bad age wise, and the 747 a similar age. I am guessing that the MH J product is similar to Skybed MK1, so there is really not that much of an advantage there, MH service is probably better then QF, and the food some people rave some people don't, but the same can be said about QF.

MH is one of those airlines where some people love it, but others don't. If I wasn't worried about points/status, I'd chose MH as I don't think QF is worth the $2k premium.

Flew BNE-LHR-BNE last March in MH J. Excellent flights and service, as good as or better than QF, and will use them again in 2011 once have requalified as WP. Only downside was that on the way back the plane went through Sydney before reaching Brisbane, which is a bore at the end of a long flight.

QF use the older 333 on the PER-SIN and PER-HKG routes. They are about the same age as the MH 772s I think, so not much difference there. The new 332s are only used domestically from PER.

On MH, make sure you take the afternoon flight out of Perth / morning flight into Perth as that would use the 772, not the ancient 333s on the night/midnight flights.

The oldest QF A330's are about as old as the youngest MH 777
