OK, this has me intrigued. Why is it on QF 737's that the forward dunny seat stays up, but on the VA variety, the seat refuses to stay in the up position? Is this a VA ploy to ensure blokes have to sit to do No.1s or it just an oddity?

It very well could be a ploy. My uncle used to be a coach driver, I remember he once told me to always sit down on the dunny on coaches in case we hit bumps.
It only later occurred to me that he'd say that because he was the one whom used to have to clean the facilities should us men miss the mark.

Perhaps VA feel the same way, and auto closing lids are just their subtle way of tell us to sit down?

Or that he had concern for anyone that had to use the loo after you!

This happens with various plane toilets.

Fortunately I have two hands and so it is not that big a deal.

My main reason for starting this thread, is to prove AFF has more hard hitting stories than 60 minutes! Either God or evolution provided blokes with the ability to stand and urinate, so I think it's our duty to oblige! Now all God or evolution has to do is provide a mirror at birth, so some men know they're not as well endowed as they may think and to stand a foot closer to the bowl to stop the puddle on the floor!

I tend to believe harvyk's uncle may be on the mark (to counter those pax who aren't on the mark)! ;)

Been in plenty of QF 738s with droopy toilet seats. I think it may just be related to age / in service condition of the lid.

Bigger issue (at 6'4") is inability to stand upright in front loo......

As has been mentioned hold the seat up with one hand.

P.S. I've encountered this issue on other aircraft.

FWIW the seat on Fokker F100 and F75's stay up!
