Backing secured for major airport serving Melbourne's south-east

A $7 billion proposal to build a privately-owned international airport for Melbourne's south-east will be presented to the Victorian government next week.
Melbourne-headquarted Paragon Premier Investment Fund wants to build a commercial airport between Koo Wee Rup and Lang Lang, to service Melbourne's booming south-eastern suburbs and the state's east.

I've always thought that Avalon is too close to Tulla to really gain traction as a proper 2nd option. Somewhere like this may be too far out due to the ever-spreading residential sprawl in Melbourne's South East, but the developer seems to be confident.

How many people even know where that is, they need to think of a catchy name.

Maybe get Ryanair airport naming department on to it.

Not sure if calling it Westernport would work but it might be better, although its East of Melbourne might confuse some people.

Ryanair would simply call it Melbourne (Koo Wee Rup). You don't need to know where it is. After all who would have known (or indeed present tense knows) where Beauvais, Charleroi, Reus, Hahn and Bergamo are located? All are referred to by major city name first.

They should build a train out to it

Perhaps more likely than a MEL airport link. :p

It's 4km from the disused railway line that used to run to Leongatha, and the tracks remain in place (not yet converted to a rail trail) .... although who knows how much it would cost to restore.

From what I hear it's a long line of taxis available for pax to travel in.....before one ever stops in front of you at Mel ....aaarrrghh !

Still more direct ad often cheaper than the bus

And when I say "from what I hear" is really sayin' "Still trying to block it from my memory"......damn them damn queues !!!!!!!

I can see it now. Any domestic flight landing in Tullamarine will have an announcement, "Where landing at Tulla soon, any passengers departing at Tulla, please ready yourself, anybody continuing onto Koo Wee Rup or Nar Nar Goon, please remain seated"....

Would I get extra SCs? :p

That's a very fair question.

I recall some years ago, I was travelling from Udaipur in India to Goa and understood there would be a stopover at Mumbai. What wasn't listed was stopping at 4 other regional airports between Udaipur and Mumbai dropping off and picking up pax (we all had to get off and back on again and was done relatively quickly...in true Indian haste). Now there's a claim to multiple short haul fairs each with minimum SC's and Points.

Avalon is basically unused. They really need another.

Avalon's sole purpose its seems is to keep MEL semi-honest. Perhaps it could simply be rebranded as "Geelong" or "Surf Coast" airport. Yes, an airport at KWR would be a much better plan, with good geographic differentiation.
