I am taking Shrek to Melbourne next weekend and would like some suggestions for dinner on Saturday night.
Left it very late and cannot get a booking at either Vue de Monde or Rockpool which would be my two preferred options :(
Preferably in CBD but will travel to the burbs.
Preferably French, not full of large party bookings.

Or Cutler and Co, a hop/step/jump out of the CBD.
Or Matteo's, with a BYO option, another km up the road out of the centre.

In town, coughulus. Excellent but no bookings for small groups.
Perhaps Ezard at the Adelphi.

Vue de Monde (as they so ungrammatically still call it) does also wait list - and a drink at the bar is not a bad option, just on dusk.

Ive heard Matteo's is good. Note to self, must try this joint.

+1 for Cutler and Co in Fitzroy if you can get in there.

Are you an amex Plat Charge card holder? I am pretty sure rockpool is on the reserved everyday list. Not sure about Vue though, i can check.

It has been around for a thousand years, give or take a few, following in the footsteps of the original Mietta's. The tasting menu is excellent, especially if you take along some prized wines from your treasure chest, and pay just the corkage. ;) (Mention when booking that you would like to bring some special wine.)

Our group of five were impressed with the 5.30pm smorgasbord at The Langham last night if all else fails. They do a second sitting at 8.30 pm.
We tend to go to Rockpool for lunch seeing it is so close to where we stay.
Ezard, Cutler and the Italian have always been good for us.

I second Bistro Vue. You're very unlikely to get a table at Cutler & Co. or ezard (both terrific places) this close in. There's Bistro Guillaume at Crown but I preferred its first iteration before it became more casual. The Point in Albert Park is also lovely although not French.

Ah yes Mietta's....that launched a famous career didn't it???

No, but I do have a Platinum Amex Earth card. A very long shot but I will call the Concierge tomorrow.

We are staying at The Langham so that is a good fallback.
Currently going through the other suggestions as well.
Thanks folks you are as always a helpful bunch :)

I looked up the cost of evening meals on a per head basis for Melbourne meals and drinks in the last week . It is much cheaper in Melbourne than Perth to dine out.
Rockpool $97 (includes $12 per head for beer and Lemon lime and bitters)
Langham $116 (includes $20 per head for drinks)
Bistro Guillaume $71 (includes $17 per head for drinks)
There is a Langham Supper Club $175 per year that might get you 15% off directly booked accommodation, 15% off meals ( 1 800 641 107 is their number if you fall in love with the hotel).
We just eat there.

Rockpool and Vue de monde are a bit well trodden these days in my opinion ;)

Chin chin in the city is where all the hipsters are going. Problem is that it's too popular and won't accept bookings so you go about 1-2 hours before you want to eat, leave your mobile number and they'll text you when your table is ready.

Another favorite but less cutting edge
Is Cafe E Cucina in South Yarra on chapel st, tiny dark, discreet and intimate with amazing Italian service - I take my high profile clients and celebs there and know I won't be bothered.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
