It won't be news to anyone who reads comments about BITRE statistics that I sometimes post on AFF that Melbourne Airport has an unsatisfactory percentage of (domestic) flights that are more than 15 minutes late.

The airport has been attacked by Regional Express for allegedly timetabling more aircraft movements per hour than it can realistically handle.

The 'Herald Sun' has got into the act with an online story on Sunday 13 January (and presumably the print edition on Monday 14) extolling how the 'fix' of the planned third runway is urgently needed.

At least one person on AFF commented in passing many months ago that the positioning of this proposed new runway would not be not ideal for the prevailing winds. I can't find that post.

As a side issue, AviatorInsight suggested that of the three major east coast capital city airports in Australia, MEL had become the most difficult in which to operate in and out of, perhaps a title held in previous years by BNE.

There's at least some minor resident opposition in Gladstone Park to this proposed third runway, as they're the ones who are likely to bear the brunt of it.

The article, which may read like a media release from Melbourne Airport is paywalled so I can't attach it.

Anecdotally, that seems right to me. MEL used to nearly always be straightforward to fly into, but last year I had a bad run of delays, many due to 'runway works', including single runway operations.
