I have over 500k points as a Silver QFF.

Ideally id like to leave 13th OCT and return sometime late Jan '14. I have no idea how to best use my points so that i can earn SC & miles for these flights. There are classic award seats still available in multiple classes but im not sure if that is the most sensible use of points.

I can see Classic Award availability in F on QF9 on October 20. If I were you I'd jump on that and try and book it as a FASA for 192,000 points + a cash payment, which will earn you 360 SCs and 26,290 points as Silver. (It will also be quite a pleasant flight :)

To do so you'll have to call up:

You'll be wanting to "book into the P bucket".

Coming back, maybe QF10 in F on February 6 or J the day before. Again booked as a FASA or JASA if you want the status credits.

Or in F on QF2 to Sydney on February 3.

Apologies if this is a little basic, but the reason why you have to call and ask for a booking in the "P bucket" is that the seats allocated for reward point redemption can be booked two ways. One way is as a "Classic Award" through the website booking engine, in which case they don't earn any points or status credits, but the co-payment is slightly lower. Alternatively, you can call up and book the same seat as an Any Seat Award, which does earn points and status credits. It used to be possible to do this online as well but Qantas removed that facility in June. It can still be done via the call centre.

Unfortunately, it is a bit hit and miss as to whether the operator on the other end of the line will really understand what you want to do. There are numerous reports from members that suggest that using some airline booking terminology back at them and asking them to book an "Any Seat Award into the P fare bucket" may help (the 'P' fare bucket is the allotment of seats in the first class cabin for reward point redemption). Qantas also have an internal reference card for their operators called Right-on-Q #7740 outlining the procedure which might help the operator.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
