Mel to Lhr J redemption in 2 weeks time.l?

So a good friend of mine has lost a close family member and needs to go in about 2 weeks for about 2 weeks to the UK

I want to gift them a J or even F return flight.
Is my chances of getting one zero?
Have Kris, amex MR and 150k velocity

Just want to do something nice for them during a tough time

A quick look on Kris website says nothing available

Have a look at Asia Miles (assuming you can transfer there from Amex). CX via HKG often has good availability about a week out. A quick look shows most business options are available for waitlist - so may clear very quickly, or within a week.

Issue ma be orphaning points if it doesn't clear, and the uncertainty.

That's not for a classic award though. That should only be 60K points plus taxes fees and charges. Anything more than that and you're paying a premium for points plus pay, which is invariably bad value for money.

Just had a quick look on their app and showing reward availability in J around that time. TG/BR over there and AI for the return.

I thought using points only, via QF, 140k/280/420 Y/J/F plus taxes using qantas
for long haul euorpe return,

am I missing something?

I did J Melb to CDG a few years ago and it was about 295k plus $1100 in taxes, flying malaysia air

Yes

60K one way is for QF/EK/AA metal. There's a surcharge for using other carriers such as CX/BA/UL (75K one way v 60). Once you start mixing carriers from different award tables you might find that they start adding the individual sector price - but that shouldn't occur unless you are using the multi-city tool. (These are prices per person - but even 60K x 2 or 75K x 2 doesn't come to your 188K)

You need to be logged on and select 'classic award' only. Otherwise QF will also give you prices where they convert the $ fare to points. That's usually very bad value (but there can be some bargains).

In many cases it can be cheaper to buy a ticket rather than use an award, or ponts plus pay. Singapore Airlines for example has one ways Australia to Europe at the moment for just $599. That's almost less than the fees and taxes on a QF award (and you keep your points). Deals ex Europe can be in the same ball park.
