I just got back from a day trip SYD-HBA-SYD.

At both security points in SYD (T2) and HBA, I had syringes in my carry on (Small ones - Clexane).

Nobody questioned me !! Is this normal?

I was really concerned about taking them with me onboard, as I didn't have any check in and it was only a day trip.

I would have thought it should have been questioned? Had box with pharmac_ label, letters from Doctor etc just in case, but never needed them.

Hi SnowYeti,

Hope the injury is healing.

I have often been confused by what is allowed and what is banned on ac.

Nail clippers -banned.
4 foot high trophy -ok.

Metal butter knife -banned.
Metal fork -ok.

I truly believe we need an overhaul of the rules and some sort of common sense approach.

As to needles, maybe they are so small they don't show up.

ejb, I agree with you. And thanks, injury healing I think (Can't see it as its covered with cast, doesn't hurt that much now)

Had nail cutters taken off me once !!

There wasn't much in my backpack, so surely the box and the shape of the syringe should have come up?

You could do alot of damage with syringe onboard. But I guess a person with only one leg hopping is not going to be able to do much harm to anyone

Surely in this day and age they would be aware that you could have been faking injury and the cast was actually C4 explosives:rolleyes:

As I said before the rules do need to be looked at. I really believe at the moment that all the "screening" is really to make us feel good and is not very effective aside from its deterront value.

YMMV

At SYD T3 last week, they made me hop through the 'scanner' WITH my crutches. Of course it bepped.

At BNE last week, they made me hop through WITHOUT crutches.

At SYD T2 and HBA today, they just wheeled me right through and gave a light pat down (was just a show) as they didn't pat me that much, not like LAX security  where it's like getting a massage, but invasive !

So 110mls of liquid and I am a potential bomber..........5kgs of unknown hard white stuff and all good mate. That sums up the crazy world in which we fly.

I know rules are there for my safety and I appreciate that but I do ask they apply them with some intelligence.

you mean 110 mls of unknown liquid vs 5 kgs of unknown hard white stuff that has a different consistency to plastic explosive and doesn't set off the explosives detector.

The liquids bans at least are about a known and credible threat. Whereas nail clippers, knitting needles and even a syringe are not things that would be very useful in taking control. I'd certainly have no problems taking on someone with these items. Compare those things to the empty glass beer bottles that I regularly take on flights, or even a bottle of grog. I'd rather get my nails clipped than have my face glassed.

Sharps are allowed (for medical reasons), but are supposed to be declared and separately screened:

Frequently Asked Questions – Travelling with Medicines

What happens if I need to travel with a hypodermic needle?
If you, or your carer, need to travel with hypodermic needles, you should present the needles and any supporting documentation to the security screening officer at the airport and to the cabin crew onboard.

A medical practitioner or paramedic caring for someone, or an ambulance officer responding to an emergency may carry hypodermic needles, a defibrillator or aerosol for medical purposes.

In practice though, I think a lot of that is overlooked due to the large number of diabetics who need insulin shots, and various other medical issues that require needles (even epi-pens for example for certain allergies)

I agree that the restrictions list is a little overboard. But I can't change it...

Apparently it's the nail file part of nail clippers that are the problem. When my clippers got found, the security lady snapped the file off in one go and handed me back the clippers.

She'd had a lot of practice.

Medhead, would you have a problem with taking on someone with broken/separate sections of a fly fishing rod? You might get bludgeoned!!:D

I have written to Sydney Airport Security about bringing my fly rod as carry on luggage:
"....would like to bring with me my fly fishing rod as carry-on luggage.
The overall length is 9’ 6” and is broken up into 4 pieces and is carried in a PVC tubing with a canvas like material as covering and is zippered at the top.It is unlockable."

And their reply....
"Thank you for your email.

Unfortunately you will not be able to carry the item in question onto the airplane as a carry-on item as the Aviation Transport Security Regulations classify fishing rods as sporting items that are prohibited from being taken onto a plane as carry-on items. Further it falls into the category of items that may be used to bludgeon or threaten to bludgeon a person.:shock::shock:

I would therefore advise you carefully pack the item in question and advise your carrier of the fragile nature of the item in question and query how they may assist you in its transportation as a checked luggage item."

:D funny.

I'd certainly take on the rod of bludgeoning. Protect the head, so what if I take a few body hits.

Actually, I rather be bludgeoned by a rod than a glass bottle. Surely a bottle is an item that may be used to bludgeon or threaten to bludgeon a person.

But the difference between a bottle and a fly fishing rod is that you don't make millions out of selling fly fishing rod's duty free...

<oops, my cynical side has come out again>

Could you imagine McBank if they banned bottles on board, the revenue from duty free would disappear overnight and send them broke.

Security is inconsistent.

When travelling with a friend to the USA, he accidentally left a pencil sharpener in his backpack. It pass through without problems but when I thought about it, it does take much to unscrew the blade and you have a dangerous device.

You'd have to be very accurate to cause serious damage with such a small blade.

And with this, I rest my case:mrgreen: on the absurb definitations and rules regarding the Security arrangements (notwithstanding the fact that we do need the security arrangements in place!). Time to take another look at the definitions, rules, process etc etc??:rolleyes:

The defence rest!

I'm not sure. Without signalling out a particular community or religion, and not withstanding anti-discrimination laws, why can't airlines say, if someone from your community does this, don't expect to fly with us, you're responsible for dobbing.

No one dobs for the right reasons, start, so we can get past the absurdity of having all this security just to weed out one type of individual.

Yes terrorists, and pretty much from one religion.
