I have a daughter who is emigrating to Darwin, NT, Australia from the UK in January, 2010. She obviously has a lot of things to take with her and wishes to maximise her free baggage allowance travelling Economy class. I have been researching this and have learned that the rules have recently changed. Previously if travelling via North America, the free allowance was 2bags, 32kg each. (Via Asia, this was 1 bag, 23kg).

I note now that for a lot of airlines, free allowance has been reduced to 1 bag, 23kg with a premium to pay for weights between 23 & 32kg. This also seems to apply if you fly via North America. However, I note Air New Zealand (via LAX) still allows 2 bags, but at the reduced 23kg each.

Yet if you fly BA to LAX & onward via Qantas, your free allowance is 1 bag and 2 bags respectively (again 23 kg each bag.) How helpful!!

I am aware that Qantas do discounted migrant fares to some airports in Australia with a free baggage allowance of 40kg, but not to Darwin as the Singapore/Darwin route is with Jetstar even thought it is Qantas owned! Even then this 40kg allowance can seemingly be beaten as above.

I am confused by all of this and would appreciate your advice as to the best route/airline my daughter should book to maximise her free baggage allowance and minimise the extra charge for increased bag weight from 23 to 32 kg.

Thank you in advance for your help.

BA may be a good option to go for. BA allows 1 piece of 23Kg though up to an additional 10 pieces can be purchased for GBP32 per piece online if you book by 10th November

( after 10th November the cost will change to GBP32 for 1st extra bag and GBP72 for each bag after that ) . see British Airways - Additional and overweight baggage

This will get you a lot of luggage to Australia

Finnair via new york will get you 2 x 23kg in economy class.

Note this is an aroundtheworld fare so return will be via asia and back to 1 x20kg

GBP32 for 23Kg is better than the courier companies such as Excess Baggage. I doubt that will be able to get better than GBP1.39 per Kg
