On Wednesday 21 December 2016 B738 9M-LNV, the 1500 hous from PER to KUL was airborne at 1627 It should arrive at 2157, 62 minutes late.

OD156 on Sunday 26 March 2017, the 0120 hours redeye from PER to KUL did not take off until 0232, so arrival is predicted for 0750, 35 minutes late. 9M-LCC is the B738.

Monday 3 April sees the new 0715 hours flight from BNE to DPS, OD158 (B738 9M-LCG) not having become airborne until 0939, so arrival is predicted as 1324, 99 minutes tardy.

Any idea what loads are like on these flights?

docjames, in January 2017 (a peak month inbound), Malindo Air filled 88.4 per cent of its Australia-bound seats and 69.4 per cent of its outwards seats from Australia. It operated 53 flights during January 2017:

https://bitre.gov.au/publications/ongoing/international_airline_activity-monthly_publications.aspx

This was prior to its Brisbane flights, as the DPS - BNE and return sector only commenced on 31 March 2017.

When the April 2017 international air passenger statisitics issued by BITRE are issued in June or July, they will not break down the various Malindo Air routes so we won't be able to tell how many are on each BNE flight each way. We also won't be able to do it by using another table in these statistics that tallies the number of passengers in each direction between BNE and DPS because Malindo Air (OD) does not have that market to itself.

If it was a route such as Manila - Melbourne where PR has a nonstop flights monopoly, we could do the latter calculation.

On Friday 7 April 2017, OD152, the mid afternoon 1500 hours PER - KUL that did not take off until 1642 hours with B738 9M-LNW should arrive at around 2214, 79 minutes behind the timetable.

Sunday 30 April sees OD158, the 0715 hours BNE - DPS (B738 9M-LCD) not having become airborne until an extremely delayed 1252 hours. Accordingly, arrival should be at about 1700 hours instead of 1145, 315 minutes tardy.

Melburnian1, thank you for all the good work you do on this forum.

I am in the process of booking flights and I find that PER -> KUL -> PER on Malindo are my only option as I wish to fly on from KUL. I am concerned about reliability on Malindo. But it seems from this thread that their flights are quite reliable.

I am planning to book a Tuesday afternoon Malindo flight to connect with a Thursday morning flight on EK, requiring two nights in KLIA.

Is this a reasonable plan?

...Is this a reasonable plan?

sinophile888, bear in mind that I and others may not examine every flight that flies within, into or out of Oz...impossible.

That said, you plan is an excellent one provided (as a given) that you perceive OD to be safe. That's the most basic requirement. You will minimise your chances of missing a connection by having two nights in Kuala Lumpur. Many travellers may not be as careful planners, or may be in too much of a rush to allow 36 or 48 hours between connections.

While it has the deficiency in that its measures typically only cover a maximum of the most recent 60 or 61 flights - it would be better to have an annual snapshot - FlightStats - Global Flight Tracker, Status Tracking and Airport Information has a handy 'flight reliability and punctuality' rating out of five. The worst flights (where excessive late running is prevalent and some cancellations occur) may get as low as 0.1 out of 5.

OD152 from PER to KUL has yet to be 'rated' by FlightStats, perhaps because it has not been operating for sufficiently long.

You are correct in that OD does not feature here much, but part of that is probably that I and others may not observe or record many of its late flights; the other factor is that with it using smaller aircraft, the representation does not stand out overly well on FR24 so I or others may have an unconscious 'selection bias' towards the twin aisle planes and hence not take as much notice of the B738s and equivalent as you might like us to. Apologies!

You could also check the alleged safety record at Airline Ratings

Thanks again, Melburnian1.
After quite a bit of pondering on your advice and doing further research, I still contemplated Malindo. I tried booking and found glitches and lost all my input. When I got back in the prices had increased which annoyed me a little. So I tried again the next morning and the prices had increased again.

More research and we finally settled on an alternative. I am now flying QF to SIN followed by MH to KUL on the one ticket. My daughter, who has an exam in the morning, will fly D7 direct (leaves around 4pm). We will both fly D7 for the return KUL to PER. My daughters two flights came to A$322 in total, mine A$795 plus A$405. I am hoping for an upgrade on QF and paid for a lie-flat seat on the return leg.
I am much more confident that this scheme will work as we don't want to miss the EK flight out of KUL.

PS. the reason we are flying out of KUL is that the J fares were nearly A$2000 cheaper than out of SIN.

sinophile888, this information may be of use to many AFF members.

Could you please start a thread regarding it in AFF's 'cheap international airfares' section?
