Ok,

I have just looked at the availibity within each class on Expert Flyer.
But when I look at say SeatGuru the seat rows it shows for each class is different.

ie Some rows of PE will be in business seats and some rows of PE are presumbaly economy (this is not visable for my Ocy 31 departure and other flights about then).

Now is this because QF have struggled to fill the pemium classes and so have increased the number of economy seats?

My vested interest is as a QC NB member is what my chances may be of scoring an upgrade ( a call to me by QF within 48 hours offering to metupgrade my dicounted Y ticket which is not normally upgradable)...or a soft upgrde of say a PE seat with economy service.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

It appears they are planning to use a Pacific config 744 (probably a 744-ER). but due to low demand for J seats and high demand for Y seats, they are adjusting the cabins. So F cabin remains as usual. J is using upper deck and forward lower deck J cabin (row 23-26). The rear lower deck J cabin (rows 29 and 30) are to be used for Premium Economy passengers, along with the first section of the regular PE cabin (rows 34 and 35).

Economy starts at row 36 to the back of the b*s. So some lucky economy passengers who score a seat in rows 36-39 will be seated in Premium Economy seats.

Thanks for that.

I thought it was along those lines.

Next question is then whether those rows are morely to go to Y pax with some form of staus or whether they go to those who have paid for one of the more expensive Y tickets (ie above restricted Y pax with status).

Or first in first served.

Well as a QP NB I was allocated 37D (Y+ Seat) on a O class fare.
The aircraft changed and I was able to put in a points upgrade, but I wasn't able to change the seating allocation (PS,SG,WP I assume can).
So if you get allocated Y+ / J seat, first in first dressed, good luck to you!
:p

Qantas use a computer system to determine what seats are available to each passenger for pre-selection. It uses a combination of FF status and fare class paid to make that determination. So a passenger with high status and a high fare class may be able to pre-select seats in the Y+ cabin, while a passenger with low status and on a cheap fare may not see them available for selection. And of course the earlier you select your seat the more options are generally available to you.

Expect that by the time check-in opens, its unlikely the best seats will be available.

I believe it's a little more complicated than that; the ranking order takes into account things like FF status, PNR associations, SSR's & booking class.

This is also used for op-ups should they be deemed necessary. More here: http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/community/playground/the-op-up-thread-18198.html#post247529
