I am attending a lunch in a couple of weeks with a 'bring a magnum' theme. Unfortunately my cellar is very lacking in large format bottles, so I am hoping to track down something suitable to purchase to take along. We already have white covered so am looking for a red.

I have had a bit of a look and there are a few around, but obviously a bit harder to come buy than your standard bottle, and value seems very variable (I.e. often much more than buying 2x 750ml bottles) - so I am wondering if any of you have purchased/come across any magnums recently that you would recommend? I should have enough time to buy online, or can pickup from a store in Sydney.

Thanks in advance!

Expect to pay around 2.5 times a 750ml price a magnum in Australia.

Most wineries will have some of their wines in magnums and often back vintages too. Any half decent wine store will also have a few bottles in magnums. Sometimes, they don't really sell, so might be a little flexible on pricing in order to move product.

I recall seeing in the latest Vintage Cellars magazine a few large format bottles. I don't think they were anything special, but being realistic, a magnum of anything half decent is going to cost a bit.

Not sure where you are located, but Summer Hill wine shop can easily get in Torbreck large format bottles. I also recently picked up some Barossa Old Vine Company magnums from Grays. Langtons has had many magnums of Hewitson, d’Arenberg Coppermine Road, Cullen DM, Mount Mary Quintet etc. recently. Check the weekend unreserved auctions.

Curious, what did you end up getting?

If we had a "bring a magnum" gathering in MY circle it would be rather different...lol

(I am a dedicated competitive pistol shooter...)

And if we were invited to a magnum party by family friends it would be vanilla, mint, caramel etc.

There is a great deal by Wynn's currently on for their Black Label Cab (one of the best value for money Cabernet's in Australia IMO).
They are selling their 13/14/15 Magnums at $62 each for their club members - free to join, also free shipping. Slightly misleading ad as I thought it was $62 for the set which I would have bought out their entire cellar for that price.

Is this Wynns Gables Club or something else?

Had a look around Langtons after following Steady’s links, and came across a 2011 Barolo for a steal - sensational after a 2hr decant!

Thanks everyone for your advice, I think this will need to become a more regular occurrence
