OK - so all of my previous stays have been transits and the Sheraton Skyline at LHR has been quite suitable.

But I'm looking at a Cpl-night stay in Feb and thinking about something nice in the city. Preferably SPG as I'll probably do a challenge in the new year.

Aloft looks nice and reasonably priced..... Anyone have any experiences?

I'm also open to suggestions for alternatives....

(I don't have any "must do" attractions on my list - I'm just catching up with friends and they'll come to me)

I stayed at the relatively new Intercontinental Westminster a few months ago and highly recommend it. Excellent service, well appointed rooms, located right beside Scotland Yard/ opposite tube and 2 mins walk to Westminster Abbey. Also the restaurant was excellent - Blue Boar Smokehouse.

Aloft is a cookie cutter type hotel, think 3-4 star, nothing flash but comfortable, dispensers in the shower for body wash etc. I have not stayed in a Eurpean Aloft but I suspect they are good value.

Last trip I stayed at Le Meridian Piccadilly in a Club room.

Centrally located for shopping and the theatre, about 1 minute walk to Piccadilly Circus tube station, and it's SPG.

My stay was enjoyable :)

We stayed in the Thistle Marble Arch for 10 days last March, and enjoyed it. It's rated as 4 stars (possibly generous) but it's on Oxford St, across the road from Hyde Park, within walking distance from all the main attractions and right over a tube station. The breakfasts were very good, but we didn't have any other meals there. Very affordable.

Thanks all for the opinions so far - most helpful.

Markis - I think you're right about Aloft too.

The W looks amazing but I can't justify spending that much to be honest.

So Le Meridien looks the most likely SPG option but still pricey.

Looking at the Hilton options - Hilton Park Lane doesn't look too bad and the points plus pay looks pretty attractive as well.

I'll check out the other suggestions mentioned above as well.

Last two times I've stayed at the Mandeville which is a fantastic location for shopping. Definitely a smaller / boutique hotel. They gave us a super-early check-in for free in October (QF9 gets in very early) which was fantastic and has probably ensured our loyalty for the next time we go back.

It may be worth emailing the W and seeing if they'll do you a deal? I sent them an email and they offered me a better rate than I could find online, but it was still a bit higher than I wanted to pay.

The Aloft is not bad, I stayed there in July although I loved Le meridian when I visited in October primarily because it's more of a luxury establishment that's affordable if you book via the likes of Reservation Scanner.com a cool deal site where 70% off is the norm. It's a very friendly hotel which we all appreciate when travelling so far overseas. Comfortable beds and the food was fantastic but perhaps a little on the expensive side, however we did only pay 70% less than tarrif price so for me it was a fabulous deal/ experience. Also the location is excellent for sightseeing and general browsing around.

Reservation Scanner.com a cool deal site where 70% off is the norm..

Why would you book using that service when a best rate guarantee would invoke a stay thats points earning and gives a further 10% off that sites prices?

Stayed at the Waldorf Hilton on Aldwych last time and thought it was great. The hotel is in an old building with a lot of character, and there's a great bar downstairs. Very centrally located - easy walk to Covent Garden, Mayfair etc.

If you don't mind being near Liverpool St Station area, I highly recommend the Andaz (directly on top of the station). The w/end rates are excellent (I've found rates well under £100 on weekends, but weekdays soar due to its proximity to the business district). I know it's Hyatt and not SPG, but I love it there. Some great dining options and a pretty reasonable, albeit noisy, champagne bar.

To add to the OP's question, I will be in LON mid Feb and would prefer a HH brand for not too much money. There seems to be a vast selection of places to choose from - any thoughts?

Well I'm short-listed on the Hilton Park Lane.

Points plus pay is quite reasonable (32K plus £92) which I consider a little better than the W @ $600 per night.

Still checking out others suggestions as per above.

Thanks all for the input :)
