Hi,

I'm looking to book a hotel in London for December. I don't know much about London geography so I'm looking for suggestions.

4 star plus preferred, located somewhere central - I like to be able to wander out of hotels for a walk or feed. Close to the tube. Also, we'll be catching the train to France at OMG o'clock for a day trip one day so convenient to that station would be good too.

Hotel or area suggestions welcome.

Firmdale group of properties are fantastic - Firmdale Hotels

I love staying at The Soho & Covent Garden Hotel - both are very, very good.

Both are well located right in the thick of things........ATM I'm favouring CGH, but only just!

IMHO, If you're looking for classic style, boutique & first class everything - these ones deliver!

I'm staying at The Trafalgar next month (owned by Hilton), right in the middle of Trafalgar Square...excellent location for all the tourist sites and a short cab ride to catch the Eurostar

Have stayed at The Trafalgar, Hilton Metropole and Tower Bridge.
Location wise and overall hotel I think the best was Metropole. Super close to Paddington. Across the road from Edgeware Road Tube and the buses on Edgware road also convenient.
The Trafalgar was achingly hip if you're into that sort of thing: mood lighting in the lifts and common areas leading to that authentic "bordello" feel. The bedroom was pretty spacious, with a great bathroom and amenitiesImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1338975857.566370.jpg

But I think the lack of an exec lounge and the general tourist environs counted against it.
YMMV

It's pricey but opposite the Marylebone tube station (Waterloo line) and walking distance to Oxford street.

Landmark London hotel.

I stay at St Ermins Hotel a couple of weeks ago. It was great. Cost worked out to be about $640 for 3 nights. very close to St James Park Station, which is on the circle line. Staff were great. Easy walk to Westminster, Buckingham palace, horse guards etc as well as further a field if you're into walking a bit. Free wifi is available for use in the foyer and bar. I think the cab fare to the eurostar was about 15 to 20 quid.

I also had a night at the Mayfair Holiday Inn. I wasn't there for long so couldn't really form a proper view, but it did feel a bit old. Concierge wasn't too keen to get me a cab when I left. But it was also a fairly central location for my needs. Close to Green Park Tube Station, which is 4 stations from King Cross/St Pancras Station for the eurostar.

I assume the Hilton one is "Hilton London Metropole". It seems to get reasonable reviews, but there is a complete lack of info about their rooms on their website. It seems they're more interested in conferences and meetings than hotel rooms.

However, it does look like a good choice. Can anyone else comment on it?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

All three of those hotels are owned by Hilton

Personally, I wouldn't consider Earls Court 'central'. Handy to stuff, but not central.

The Royal Horseguards - right on the banks of the Thames opposite the Eye - hence close to all central locations - easy walk to Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square etc - and has two tube stations within 4 minute walk!

I can't agree more with amaroo. These hotels are fantastic and I always stay at the Soho if possible. Fantastic location and wonderful hotel.

Stayed with Family at Stauton Hotel last September....its a 5 minute walk to Covent Garden and really nice and quaint B&B hotel

I can't really compare it to others, because it's been years since I stayed in any other London hotels... But I really like the Intercontinental Park Lane. Excellent hotel, comfy, with good service - what more could you ask for?

It's not as central as other options, but with good tube access and local bits and pieces (including some excellent cheap food options!), I don't find being slightly out of the City to be a big problem at all.

Cheers,

Danny

Last year I stayed at the Hotel Megaro.

It is on Euston Road, opposite St. Pancras and King’s Cross tube station. There are also at least 4 bus routes from outside the door. We seldom used the tube and found the bus got us to almost anywhere we wanted. There are plenty of cafes nearby as you would expect in an area so close to so much public transport. The hotel’s location was particularly convenient for a day trip to Paris on the Eurostar.

Our room at the hotel was surprisingly spacious. The staff was friendly and helpful.

One morning, we heard a gentleman booking every Monday to Thursday for the next 10 months.

If you're up for some hotel swapping, I'd suggest a hotel close to Kings Cross / St Pancras station the night before your day trip ; just makes life a lot easier.

Apart from that, hm, are there any particular things you're wanting to do while here?

Honestly, we haven't got that far yet. (The 5 day stay in London is a tag on to a wedding in Ireland. It seemed like a good idea to drop in to London) Typical tourist stuff is the likely list - its my first time in Europe.

TBH I'd recommend spending the 5 days travelling around Ireland instead!
