A thread to consider the reality of living in a society infected with Covid-19

As the reality of broad infection spreads like wildfire through our communities, here is an interesting primer for us to consider everyday dealing with the bug. It was copied from a facebook post.
There is very little prophylactic info about and a bit of prevention may well help our well being.
What else can we/should we all do to stay well as the virus flows around us ?

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT - CORONAVIRUS
Last evening dining out with friends, one of their uncles, who's
graduated with a master's degree and who worked in Shenzhen Hospital
(Guangdong Province, China) sent him the following notes on
Coronavirus for guidance:
1. If you have a runny nose and sputum, you have a common cold
2. Coronavirus pneumonia is a dry cough with no runny nose.
3. This new virus is not heat-resistant and will be killed by a
temperature of just 79/80 degrees. It hates the Sun.
4. If someone sneezes with it, it takes about 10 feet before it drops
to the ground and is no longer airborne.
5. If it drops on a metal surface it will live for at least 12 hours -
so if you come into contact with any metal surface - wash your hands
as soon as you can with a bacterial soap.
6. On fabric it can survive for 6-12 hours. normal laundry detergent
will kill it.
7. Drinking warm water is effective for all viruses. Try not to drink
liquids with ice.
8. Wash your hands frequently as the virus can only live on your hands
for 5-10 minutes, but - a lot can happen during that time - you can
rub your eyes, pick your nose unwittingly and so on.
9. You should also gargle as a prevention. A simple solution of salt
in warm water will suffice.
10. Can't emphasise enough - drink plenty of water!
THE SYMPTOMS
1. It will first infect the throat, so you'll have a sore throat
lasting 3/4 days
2. The virus then blends into a nasal fluid that enters the trachea
and then the lungs, causing pneumonia. This takes about 5/6 days
further.
3. With the pneumonia comes high fever and difficulty in breathing.
4. The nasal congestion is not like the normal kind. You feel like
you're drowning. It's imperative you then seek immediate attention

* snap !!
Care to share the rebuttals with real people rather than faceless facebook "professionals" …..
The folks who read the list you moderate would then be better informed I suggest...

"many here are all" is also fodder for the grammar thread .. 🧐

Sure...I received that information in your OP by email from my parents (who received it from my godparents, their best friends). All are in their 80's and have compromised (to some degree) immune systems.

Some of the comments (shared here anonymously):

- This stuff has been doing the rounds all over FB and it doesn’t read like the official advice, from like doctors

- Most of this is incorrect, but I'm at work so don't have time to correct it! (written by a doctor)

- Don’t share this it’s nearly 100% rubbish (written by a doctor, a member of AFF)

and a little later by the same person:

- Number 8 is true. Ignore the rest. It’s been doing the rounds for weeks supposedly from an “Experienced Infectious Diseases Physician”. It isn’t

- I saw this posted by a family member - couldn't face the hassle of pointing out issues. These things are just nonsense. Simple - wash your hands well and often (not insanely so you don't get dermatitis) and don't touch your face. (written by a person in the medical industry, but not a doctor)

The final comment which I loved:

- OMG - this type of nonsense circulating around FB is the last thing we need. Whoever authored this should be put into quarantine until the covid-19 pandemic is over.

Perhaps some practical tips from those in the industry are best considered:

The last one was shared by an anesthesiologist....and Palli is Professor, School of Chemistry, UNSW.

Thanks for the reply , I had no idea about the quality of the initial post material , it was just a thread starter.
The post immediately sunk without a trace and I decided not to cultivate it as it was entirely speculative.
It had been steadily disappearing deeper into the past when you decided to revive it.
Keeping folks informed with the most up to date info , preferably with identified sources , is the best way to manage perceived incorrect info in the public domain.

Presume you are one of the HFC Community, it hardly "immediately sunk without a trace" with 34 comments within a 6 hour period. I didn't revive it, but heh YMMV.

The whole reason for posting it was to test the veracity of the points raised, as I stated in my opening post: "I received this email that looks like it’s doing the rounds and it seems to give valid information but would love for anybody to challenge the veracity of said information"

Something we agree on and the basis behind me posting and having it debunked, as i haven't sent it on and in doing so, helped to break the chain. Also told my parents not to pay much attention, apart from point 8.

What is the government's end game? Does it even have one?

Why is that areas with zero cases of CV19 are being locked down? Are we going to wait until there are absolutely no cases within Australia at all before we try to reopen for business, or will there be a progressive restart across areas that don't have cases.

Are we now seeing massive government and police over-reach? The case of the mother taking the L plater for a drive is a classic. What harm was possibly being done?

You're allowed out for health reasons. At what point does it become mental health. What about the single person, locked away by themselves?

In some ways government, and police in particular, bother me. They seem to have found it so easy to emulate East Germany.

While I am aware that we must always be prepared to watch for Government overreach I am certainly happy with the way the Federal and W.A. State governments have acted so far. We have had very little, if any, police over-reach here in the West. I look at Sweden - Population around 10 Million Infections 10,000 and deaths 887 the Netherlands population 17 Million 24,413 infections and 2.641 deaths. Or even South Korea, which has been much lauded for its response, 52 Million population (roughly twice our size) infections 10,480 deaths 211.

Compared to these countries we are tracking very well but it is still early days and all the medical authorities say we must keep our our policies in place to avoid sudden spikes.

And a good proportion of the deaths recorded in Australia were (and still are) from people on cruise ships.
