Liquid in hand luggage between Aust and NZ

Are there the usual restrictions involved between the two countries? Ie, can I bring a bottle or two of wine back in my bag on board?

Once you are past the usual LAG international security in either Australia or New Zealand or the USA there are no further LAG restrictions. In other words there is no secondary screening at the gate. So once in the "sterile" areas, you can buy what you like as long as long as you meet customs requirements at the destination (and you are not making connecting flights that could limit LAGs.)

A flight to NZ (or from NZ) is no different from any other international flight - same rules apply re liquids in carry ons.

That's not (quite) true.

There is no secondary gate check required for non-stop flights originating from AUS, NZ and USA.

There is such a check for all other countries for flights to Australia. So you can buy > 100ml items in the "sterile" areas in AUS, NZ and USA as you like.

You can't do that in other countries for flights to Australia unless the shop delivers it to the gate.

I took the reference to bringing back bottles of wine from NZ as bought from a winery etc vs duty free - given no reference to duty free was made.

You can take a "a bottle or two aboard" (or more) if you buy them in the sterile area in NZ, AUS and USA. You can't do that in other countries, unless they deliver to the gate. That's a fairly big difference. So it's not really no different from any other international flight. No reference was given to a winery. But fair enough, if purchased outside the airport sterile area, then the usual LAG laws (> 100ml) would apply for carry-on.

Well it actually IS different - only NZ and USA are exempt from the Australian secondary gate screening requirement for flights to Australia.

But unfortunately that's not going to help you.
