We had an issue in JFK with CX forcing us to go through all checked lugged and throw out any liquids/aerosols greater than 200ml. They said it was a new directive as of the 1st of January. I disputed this and they checked with 3 different lots of people who all agreed with them but none of them could show me where this was in writing. We had to throw out all the hairsprays, deodorant, shampoos, etc Was at least a hundred dollars of stuff out of the girls bags. However, the alcohol was allowed???

I have searched and still can't find anything. Anyone know what is going on?

Interesting. The TSA website and the CX website doesn't seem to have any reference to what you describe. Maybe a new HKG rule? But that doesn't seem likely either.

I googled it and nothing comes up (you'd expect this to be all over the internet).

I suspect they have misinterpreted the prohibition on aerosols which is found here? (obviously not reading the bit about 'personal items' being allowed): https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/prohibited-items

Did they ask you if you had these items in your baggage or find them during x-ray? Normally if they ask me if I have any aerosols, and the aerosols comply with TSA guidelines, I respond with 'I have no prohibited items'.

No. It was when we were checking the luggage in. We had to open all 7 suitcases and go through them while they stood over us.

Was the same thing happening to all other pax around you? Can't imagine how they could get the full load of pax checked in on time doing that to everyone.

Sounds very bizarre.

Putting me off CX just following this!

Totally agree ...... Asking for a refund of my lost hair products would be next on my agenda.

It was the first class check in at JFK (on the way to YVR) so there was only one other person there and they basically had carry on only. It wasn't a CX thing, it was the baggage people who were collecting the baggage that started it and they were calling the facilities people to verify it. We had 4 later flights (wife and kids on 2 and me on another 2) and not a word about it.
