re: Last ever [bookable] "DJ" flight [number] tonight

I always wondered how Virgin came to have the flight/airline code 'DJ'!

re: Last ever [bookable] "DJ" flight [number] tonight

end of an era - all the flying i did back when DJ started was with them for leisure and I don't think I ever had a bad flight with them (of course not understanding the difference between LCC and Legacy :)).

Last ever "DJ" flight tonight

An amazing transformation. Who would of thought they would get here when they started. I remember a lot of people comparing them to Compass and thinking they would last against QF and AN as there was only room for two airlines.

Finally I can stop posting DJ/VA every time I refer to them :)

The “DJ” code refers to “Disc Jockey” and it pays homage in part to the Virgin Group’s links to the music/entertainment industry during Virgin Blue’s inception stages in the late 1990s. It is believed the project name for the then new airline was in fact “Disco”. The vision at the time was for funky, fresh and dynamic and to stand out from the more conservative dominant domestic players of QANTAS and Ansett Australia.

If AN hadn't collapsed when it did I doubt DJ/VA would still be around today....

I find it somewhat ironic that the owner of Ansett at the time of its collapse, Air New Zealand, now owns a significant stake in Virgin Australia!

My comment was past tense, as in I had wondered, prior to reading the attached article! My comment didn't make this clear, however!

Not as ironic as the amount of ex AN "experience" being in positions of power at QF or having a QF plane named Ansett.

If DJ hadn't interrupted the cozy duopoly AN might still be around today.

Austbt you're correct there is a transition period 12/13 JAN, but the article refers to the last officially booked DJ flight that can ever be booked as a DJ flight number in airline reservation systems...if you look for DJ flight numbers to book from 12JAN onwards they are not there ...

I see, thanks for clearing that up. Gee it's going to be a fun day at the airport on Sunday tho, and before my own flight I'm checking in three unaccompanied minors heading off to a different destination. It's a long time since I've had to print out so much paperwork!

This...

I can't remember the last time I took a printed itinerary to the airport...

My mum has two flights, on 24 and 31 January, booked two days ago, and her itinerary has a DJ flight number against both.

The DJ code will change to a VA code very early Sunday morning

Along similar lines, the now defunct Virgin Express, based in Belgium, had the IATA code "TV".
