Over the last 6 months I’ve done a bunch of QF 744 sectors (mostly on the ER series) and noticed the moving map display option has been removed from the Inflight Entertainment option. It remains on the remainder of the fleet. Just wondering if anyone knows the back story to this?

My fave part of the IFE experience!

Sometimes i find some of the maps like "water torture", they can move sooooooo slow. After being in the aircraft so long some are just painfully slow, especially the older ones with the yellow/red/green colours.

A CSM told me that for some reason the map display has been responsible for ongoing issues with a version of the IFE system. On a recent flight from JNB to SYD the crew mentioned 3 times before take off NOT to use the map. I wonder what coughpy technology is behind this IFE system...

If it’s the same IFE system as the A380s (which I think it is for the refurbed 747s) I once managed to crash my F seat on the 380. On the little tablet thingy there’s an inflight map which when I went to use it before landing froze the whole system (meaning they had to use the hidden manual buttons to put my seat upright for landing). Wouldn’t be surprised if it is just some buggy code

Well to me that's an IFE failure and I'd want compensation. :D

In all seriousness I've done lots of flights, including SYD-DFW and LHR-DXB-MEL where the only IFE I use is the flight map.

Agreed - once you've done some of the better new movies the moving map ranks high on the entertainment value. On the QF744's it looks as though the Map option has been removed from the menu. Although you still get to see the time remaining up in the top left corner. The moving map does come in handy on some flights as it typically gives you the first indication that you are going to be delayed into your destination or your about to undertake a diversion to an alternate airport.
