Yesterday (14 April 2017), I took Air Asia from Kuala Lumpur to Melbourne. A good flight that I will review in a separate thread.

But I "enjoyed" a new and interesting experience with the enhanced security.

There is the usual security when you check in. The line flowed smoothly and the main issue seemed to be water bottled being confiscated. Not a big deal.

But before you board the plane there is another security check where my "experience" took place.

Sure I may have contributed by forgetting/neglecting to remove my belt and the buckle clearly set off the "buzzer" as I walked through.

There were two attendants, one male and one female. The male member beckoned me aside, all very professional, and did a pat down.

But my new experience was that it was a completely pat down including my groin area! I must say that no particular attention was paid to any part of my body but having the "privates" included was something of a surprise.

Despite being a little surprised, I took the inspection as my contribution to the enhanced security that the signage said was a recent initiative to improve the passenger experience.

And, sure, whilst a little surprising, wasn't in the same league as when the doctor dons the rubber gloves to perform the yearly prostate exam.

Presumably female pat downs would be conducted by the lady member of the team at the security gate?

Basically the security person conducted a thorough pat down.

As soon as you have some "no go" regions on a pat down you can be sure that's were something will be hidden.

personally I'd like them to get the millimeter wave scanners installed. it's a bit less invasive.

Female here, had a pat down at LAX and it was VERY personal. I would hate my teenage daughter, if I had one, to go through a similar pat down. I was offered to be taken to a separate room for the pat down but said do it here, wasnt aware she was going to touch my cough and slide her hand over my cough and in between my legs numerous times.

The second screening has been in place there for a long time. (Just saying)

Ive had 2nd screening a few times, never like the last one. I needed a sit down and drink afterwards as I was a bit shaken and I consider myself a tough almost 50yr that doesnt feel precious about her personal space and Im generally OK with whats expected at airport security.

When I flew AK Kul-Syd 2 months ago, my secondary security consisted of being asked to show my passport again...was then waved through without any further bag / body inspection.

Second screening has been in place for a long time and it is awful. The queues one morning were around 45 minutes. Not good.

But then passport control in KLIA is worse. Seriously think twice about transiting.
