with all the incredible airfare deals around, wonder if kids fares(generally 25% for 2-11s & less in taxes/charges) will disappear soon.

To me, it seems a lot like servos that advertise E10 fuel cheap, but if you want higher octane, you usually pay a lot more.

So why do airlines offer $750 fares to USA mainland return & $1000 fares to EU return & still offer a discount for kids ?

Have noticed that with some airlines, kids must be under 12 years not only on departure date, but also return date.

It would be easier & more profitable for airlines, if airlines just offered the 1 fare regardless of age, per fare bucket.

I had a sticky beak at getting my under 11 year old his own business class seat and it was the same price as the four adults.
Didn't realise that under 11s received a discount .
My reference is to Qantas

In my limited experience, kids international fares were more like 75% of the adult fare, and had fewer taxes (mostly with QF).

In my experience with Qantas a childs airfare is about 20%-25% cheaper than adult airfare but as the sale price reduces the discount is much less. Saved ~$200 off a $980 airfare and not quite as much off a $680 airfare.

yes with most airlines internationally kids 2 to 11 years are 25% off fare not inc taxes & less in taxes. eg. OZ depart tax of $60 (or whatever it's called now) only applies to those 12 & over.

What I was getting at, instead of an airline advertising, a return fare to LAX for $1200/adult ($900/child which isn't advertised), they would be better off advertising a $999 fare for all based on 50/50 split adults/kids. But at $999 they might sell more seats, as it's a great price point, much more than $201 less than $1200 in the mind.
