Well I'd been putting off having to call the US AA call centre but finally did it tonight a day before I fly out.

Pleased to say the whole operation was rather painless though still waiting for my confirmation email to tell me it's all gone through but my BA flight from London to Melbourne via Singapore and Sydney in Premium Economy should do very nice for reaching my 10,000 EQPs. 5 minutes on skype. :)

19 months of AA Platinum and QC lounge access will be lovely to this lowly QF Bronze.

Provided of course that there are no major changes to the AA program in that time...

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

AFF Supporters can remove this and all advertisements

Just remember to watch for the earning rates on QF metal, especially if you fly Y using QF flight number, if you can stick to an AA or AY or BA coded flight in future travel, ex and to Australia you can really rack up the AA miles (double miles even in Y), and then redeem them on other oneworld flights, probably worth double the value of QF miles.

Keeping the Platinum status is another thing though, SYD-LHR-SYD-LHR all in PE J or even F will still leave you short or re qualifying, and they won't let you do another platinum challenge in the future, unless you reinvent yourself under another FF account I guess.

I don't know much about AA Platinum challenge but I'll be flying CX in business class from KHI to MEL (via BKK and HKG) later this year. That usually gets me plenty of Status credits on QF. Should I be crediting these flights to AA? (no status on AA) meanwhile am WP on QF

The answer is not simple, the original poster wanted some status at least (points bonus and lounge access etc) and has seen the one off AA platinum challenge as a way of getting it (the equivalent of QF Gold). You basically have to achieve 10000 qualifying points with AA (not miles with AA) within three months which the OP can do, as the flight in PE on QF will give him the number of miles flown time 1.5 (as long as he uses his AA FF number).
You have to get your head around a few figures and which airlines you can earn points with using your AA FF number.

Your are travelling 7960 miles by 1.5 so would earn more than the 10000 points needed. You need to check the discussion on Flyertalk to see if the flights you are taking are eligible, not all are.

There is a consensus on this discussion board that once you have qualified for WP you start crediting your flights to AA and build status there, as IMHO once you have reached AA Plat with double points, it is a no brainer which FF program is better (AA)
