Afternoon All,

Excuse what may be some basic questions from a JQ avoider ...

Miss BD has purchased a cheap Y return via an OTA. MEL-SIN-LHR-MAD on JQ and BA. JQ's website states that JQ interline bags with BA if on the one ticket. (I don't think this would be a problem at SIN anyway).

She enquired at JQ service desk at OOL and was informed that BA baggage rules apply.

1. Is this true?
2. If she wishes to pre-purchase an allowance for an additional bag how is this done? Each separate leg via MMB on each website - would this even be possible?

Looking forward to any feedback

Regards,

BD

When does Miss BD1959 depart, how many kilos of baggage will she have & what is the BA ticketed allowance eg 1 piece @ 23kg?

I'm not sure whether the JQ OOL ground handler (Oceania?) is the same as the JQ MEL one however saying that the BA rules apply sounds correct as they are the most significant carrier on the journey.

The trouble with multiple carriers is that their own excess baggage rates only apply when the journey is 100% on that airline so JQ have their own excess structure which is generally not per kilo but by paying extra dollars eg $40.00 for another 20 kilos of luggage. BA may have a promo rate eg $20.00 per kilo rather than on a sliding scale like JQ. So all is fine and dandy if you are only checking in MEL/SIN on JQ or checking in at SIN for the trip SIN/xLHR/MAD on BA.

Where you get into murky waters is when you checkin with JQ in MEL, if your bags get checked all the way through from MEL to MAD, then the excess weight over and above the BA allowance would be charged at the full interline rate which could be AUD60.00 per kilo so if your daughter had an extra 20 kilos she'd be looking at a $1,200.00 fee.

So to summarise:

1. Find out the total weight of the checked luggage she'll be checking in
2. Find out what the BA allowance is - check the itinerary or eticket receipt
3. Find out if both BA & JQ will allow you to pre-pay excess separately at reasonable rates (this would mean checking bags MEL/SIN on JQ then rechecking in SIN for the BA flights) so ensure there is sufficient transit time in SIN for this
4. Call a freight forwarding company and get a quote to send the excess unaccompanied as this could work out cheaper than the above option of pre-paying excess separately to both airlines

Thanks Oz.

Miss BD departed 10 days ago and I really wanted to avoid the sad look of responding to my own post. Now you have, here's the *factual* response for anyone else looking to pick up one of these weird tickets:

1. I stopped by the MEL JQi service desk one morning on my departure through MELi to get the handlers' story

2. JQ Service desk at OOL were wrong

3. As an LCC JQI do *not* follow IATA rules on MSC

4. JQi will check-in then interline without looking at downstream consequences

5. Pay JQi excess rates (they will carry a max of 40kgs but that can be distributed over up to 9 bags...go figure!!)

5. (Bleeding obvious) Purchase excess online NOT at the airport.

Miss BD checked-in at MEL and travelled through to Spain, pain-free.

Hi BD

This doesn't really explain the full situation.

Did Miss BD have to pay excess baggage to both BA and JQ?
And did she have to collect bags in SIN or just go to a transfer desk to have them transferred to BA?

Thanks
muppet

Hi muppet,

Sorry, thought point 4 clarified. She did NOT need to purchase excess on BA, JQi interlined through to final destination (Spain).

Thanks BD. I'm surprised it was that easy. An OTA keeps presenting a very cheap fare that involves a similar scenario HKG(JQ)-SIN(UL)-CMB. I'll now actually consider using it.
