I was recently seriously impressed with CX J reverse herringbone seats on a flight MEL-HKG (77W) and HKG-MNL (A350) - very comfortable and got great sleep on both legs. I preferred this seat to SQ J in every way, even though it was narrower.

I'm now looking ahead towards our next trip, to which we have 3 JL Flights in J... two of which are in their revamped J reverse herringbone setup and one in their 787 Suite setup.

I'm hoping someone out there has flown both the CX J and JL J reverse herringbone seats and can give a brief comparison between the two? Similarly if anyone has flown the CX J and JL J 787 Suite, it would be greatly appreciated.

I tried to search for this online, but can't find anything decent as JL have so many different J setups - I cant find someone who has done a direct comparison between JL and CX.

The apex suite (JAL Suite) is a fantastic seat if you snag a window. The bed is very long... I'd say 7 feet or so. And very private. The aisle seats are ok, but lack privacy and are a fair bit shorter.

Lucky from onemileatatime has a review of the seats here: Review: Japan Airlines Business Class 777 Tokyo To San Francisco - One Mile at a Time

I've flown them on Oman Air and confirm Lucky's assessment... apex window seats are the best I've experienced (haven't tried the Qatar Qsuites though). This is followed by CX reverse herringbone (window seats), followed by CX centre seats, followed by apex centre, then apex aisle.

The 777 has a slightly different set-up for the apex suites with a 2-3-2, but that's not relevant on the 787.

Thanks for the info and first hand account. Genuine dilemma - the 787 flight is the last one of the honeymoon. To take a window seat, and then jettison mrs tizey to an aisle? Or to remain in the centre seats so we're on level pegging? I feel she (as she is a bit shorter) wouldnt notice the aisle seat being shorter, but I know I would notice the window being longer. I couldnt care about her feet being near me - but she's probably more concerned with me being away from her on a plane.

Are the window seats about a foot in front of the aisle seats? I'm conscious about how far away it is as she's a very nervous flyer.

It would be fine for the window and the aisle. With the screen down you'll be able to kind of see each other and you'll certainly know each other is close by.

Locked in - 2A and 2C. Its a day flight and its unlikely we will sleep. Mrs tizey has the window seat for the Y flight HND-KIX, I get the window for the J flight NRT-MEL.. hehe. Appreciate the heads up on the bigger suite.

Any advice on the reverse herringbone on the new business class on the JAL 777-200? I know from looking at the CX layout, the centre seats are quite far apart from each other, but I feel thats probably the best for a couple? Or are the window seats so much better for sleeping? I'm thinking for the night flight KIX-HNL for which we will be tired after a very early start in Tokyo followed by a full day in Osaka, all we will want is to sleep so have got that in mind.

The centre seats for reverse herringbone are not conducive to conversation... you need to move the seats quite a long way forward, and lean forward. The noise is a disturbance to other passengers. And you don't get to disembark together (separate aisles).

My personal preference is always window seats for reverse herringbone. The limited amount of conversation you can achieve in the centre seats if off set by the benefits of the window... more actual space, more sense of space (area between seat and window), and control over the windows.

Sold! 4A & 5A for the night flight into HNL. The day flight out of HNL, we've opted for the centre seats... unlikely we'll be chasing sleep, and worth seeing how it goes for future reference.

She had mixed feelings about two window seats though. The hope of better sleep was what got over the line.. so hoping it delivers!

in terms of sleeping the window or centre seats make no difference.

if you really want to try the centre seats, do it on the night flight. During the day the views from HNL to Japan can be quite interesting, particularly some of the islands involved in significant WW2 battles... these are sometimes pointed out by the pilots.

And if you really like the centre seats, those will be the last to go, so you can always swap back from your windows to the centre.
