Any comments on starclass comfort and service? :)

Take a look around the forum - there are plenty of comments about this. I flew it from Sydney to coughet in 2009 and, as is often noted here, Star Class is roughly akin to Qantas domestic business class. It has the same seat, though in some sort of cheap leather, but in my opinion the food and service is not as good as domestic business. Still if I was looking for a cheap flight to somewhere like coughet or Honolulu then I’d probably choose Star Class again. If you get it for a discounted price (we did) then there isn’t too much to complain about.

Do it if can get a deep discount & don't mind an interstate domestic commute (for example, to say CNS to take the flight to NRT).
Be flexible with travel dates as flights get cancelled. Our 'Monday' CNS-NRT departure was cancelled. Had to arrange a Sunday OOL-NRT departure with an extra day in Japan at own cost.
FA's were good - worked hard to please. Seats were 1A, 1B front row/bulkhead but it looked very crowded behind - on overnight sector. Was somewhat amused when offered the pie in a bag. No 'in seat' AVOD but ipads to be introduced to replace the current system. Earns good sc's.
Our coming trip SYD-NRT-CTS is JAL PE (less stress).

Unlike some others on this site, I happen to like StarClass. CX Business it ain't; but at the price you pay (particularly if on special), it is good value for money.

As others have said, it is akin to QF domestic business; but about a fifth or less of the price of J on a loyalty airline.

Best bit is it earns at Business Class points and SCs, so works as a great status run if you pick it up a the right price.

If you fly J for work regularly you will probably find it a disappointment; if you haven't flown J before, you will find it a revelation.

Is there still the option of a paid upgrade to Star Class, either at check in or phoning a couple of weeks prior to the flight. I remember this being an option a year or so ago and costing aproximately $200-$300. My flight is to Bkk, btw.

You may want to consider V Australia Y+. It's normally a couple of hundred bucks cheaper than *Class.

Having flown both, I would take V Australia Y+ over *Class any day:

Better planes - they fly the 777

Better food

Infinitely better IFE system

Pretty much better everything.

For me it's a no brainer.

I agree Zeit. Unfortunately I already have my JQ ticket purchased during a sale.

Cheers.

I agree with this. If you're stepping up from Y then it's a good product.

Flew gold coast narita last year on a cheap star class fare . Excellent service all the way. Happy to travel with them again.
