From a while ago but don't think anyone posted this?... couldn't find with a search (although we know how good the search function is here...!)

JETSTAR will ask the Defence Department for permission to operate flights from the RAAF's Edinburgh base because of Adelaide Airport's high fees and restrictive curfew.
The 11pm to 6am curfew for flights landing and taking off at Adelaide, coupled with higher-than-average usage fees, is a factor preventing the airline from offering international flights from the city.

Well I guess given that most of JQ's customers come from out that way it would be more convenient for them rather than having to change buses in the city!:mrgreen:

However, this current article is a bit more specific than the one from June. Nice to see in the June article that jetstar hold up Gold coast and avalon as created change at the major airport but then go onto whinge that BNE and MEL are some of the most expensive airports

Jetstar from Edinburgh, would be pretty good for me, if they get the flights to southern Europe up and running, as I live about half between ADL and Edinburgh.

Of course, parafield would be even better :D

Actually, to be pedantic in the original (June) article Alan Joyce (as QF, not JQ CEO), indicated that SYD, BNE & MEL had some of the highest operating margins, not necessarily the most expensive airports.

With the business MEL has generated from TR, AK, JQ and the like, I am sure that they are not that expensive to deal with (from an airlines perspective), given that AVV is a half-viable alternative for LCCs. MEL's operating margins come from more than just the landing fees. MEL airport carparks combined would have to be the biggest carpark in Australia - probably bigger then the largest shopping centres- and every time you look it's prices have increased or charging changed. (day in the short term now $49, in Apr 07 it was $37 ... a nice increase of 13% p.a - airlines can't command those sort of increase.)

Always great when they set up a port-a-shack and a caravan at secondary airports, and then call it a "low cost terminal".

True and I honestly don't appreciate the distinction between expense and operating margins. I guess my really is that they claim that how the established airports operate have been modified by the low cost airports, but then when and whinged about the operating margins, and in particular the $700 mil cost to Jetstar*, at 3 airports 2 of which should have been impacted by the low cost alternative airport.

It's a contridiction, either the low cost airports are not having that much effect (likely due to the recent MEL-SYD additiion to Jetstar routes) or the whinge about the cost of airports is rubbish - but then any business wants to decrease costs.

*I'm sure the cost of parking at Melb isn't part of this cost.
