Not a biggie, but just checked in for TPE-SIN and wanted to try it on if I could take 2x 7kg hand luggage on board. I had paid for plus bundle that comes with 20kg checked luggage but only had two small bags, and I would have preferred HLO due to arrival at 01:10. But no, needed to check one bag as only allowed 7kg hand carry. I thought that was so people who had to have more than 7kg had to pay for extra luggage. But nope it's for "safety reasons". !

I guess you couldn't have everyone who paid for 20kg of luggage carrying it on. But annoying nevertheless!

Funny how BA maintain safety with no weight limit on hand bags and JQ was safe at 10kg before the reduction to 7kg....

Not a money grab at all....

I hate how they pretend this is all to do with safety. At least be honest that it's penny pinching.

Easy Jet also have no weight limit, but they are very strict on it being one bag only (so us ladies need to tuck our handbag inside our carry on bag).

I think it's a combined money grab (that's not disputable) as well as overhead space. Without going too far down the comparison track, VA don't seem to give a rats about the size, weight or quantity of hand luggage and it does really annoy me when I can't find enough space above my head to fit my tiny carry on. There has to be fair middle ground with this argument.

I think quantity and size should be the dictating requirements. Not weight. I have no doubt the overhead bids have been engineered to handle the weight of hand luggage which can be carried by one person.

Slightly off topic, they were weighing hand luggage at the gate in CNS this week.

Even if it's just the 180 pax bringing a full sized carry on bag each, there's still not enough room to house every single one of them.

I've always assumed that it would average out. A lot of times (particularly in past years) my whole luggage consisted of an A4 sized leather document/notes folder. These days, I check luggage most flights so carry on is tiny as well. So although the overheads may not cope if everyone brought on their allowance, I think it's fine when the averages are in play. It doesn't work when many people struggle aboard with 3-4 oversized carry ons, which certainly was the case with VA. I also think the included checked luggage allowance with VA has resulted in reduced carry on. I can't see any real reason for JQ to strictly monitor weight of carry ons though and restrict it to a ridiculous 7kg, especially when they just let 16 additional pax wander aboard without including their weight in their calculations (16x80kg=1280kg). That does lend itself to the "money grab" argument.
