Am I reading correctly... the 14 year old was texting his Father during the descent?

Yes indeed.

the whole media 'beat up' is stupid ....again , but it sucks the general public in... they prey on the ignorant/stupid , which in turn provides 'ratings'/profit:rolleyes:

What is it about these sorts of lines that garners your affection?

It's associated with some form of caution or warning. Which means there's a pretty obvious warning light (i.e. the big red one), plus an audio alarm, plus the ECAM comes to life with a procedure to follow. You'd have to be dead not to notice.

It's a bit like when I noticed my depressurisation. After the huge bang, and numerous alarms...

Interesting.

So how should this particular phrase in the article have been written?

The article shouldn't have been written at all. It plays on people uneducated fears. All in all, a non-event that deserves no media attention. Do we write an article when the photocopier jams at the ATO?

Isn't that just a missed approach/go around?

Passengers on board said the plane attempted to land but then climbed steeply away from the runway.

I always love this sort of stupid line...

... and the phrase following it:

"[the pilot] was asked by air traffic controllers to circle in a holding pattern until the runway could be cleared."

Surely the runway would be clear for any landing, and this doesn't normally require extra holding time. Poor writing.

Actually that bit might be true, though it isn't a case of asking for anything. I think there were some runway works happening, which meant that to have the full length (or nearly the full length) of the longest runway for their landing, they had to wait for the men/equipment to be cleared.

Yes, amusing this wasn't even commented on, when out of everything described in the article this was actually the only thing that deserved scrutiny.
