Evidenced by how when I looked to see if I'd posted a previous delay, I could not locate one, JL has an excellent punctuality record.

However on Saturday 17 June, JL771, the Friday 16 1925 hours NRT - SYD that did not take off until 2138 should arrive at 0742 hours, 92 minutes late with B789 JA867J.

'Japan Airlines' and 'delay' are antonyms such is its excellent punctuality.

However on Monday 3 July, B789 JA867J on JL771 is arriving at 0809 hours, 119 minutes late compared to its scheduled 0610 at gate time. This NRT - SYD flight had a departure time of 1925 on Sunday 2 but that became a 2210 hours takeoff. Competitor QF26 is also late, by about an hour this morning.

JL772, the 0815 hours SYD - NRT should in theory be able to depart at around the 0925 hours mark if all goes well during the turnaround.

JL781 HNL-NRT scheduled 12.35 pm 22 October is delayed by 20 hours to 09.00 am 23 October. Possibly impacted by the typhoon but I am at this stage unaware whether other flights are experiencing delays

Unusually, JL774, the Friday 24 November 0045 hours from MEL up to NRT took off at 0154 hours with B788 JA838J. Arrival should be at about 0922 hours, 47 minutes late.

Monday 24 December 2018 sees JL771, the Sunday 23 NRT - SYD 1855 hours that was airborne at 2034 likely to arrive at 07834, 54 minutes late. Aircraft is B789 JA868J.

The 0915 hours returning flight JL772 should still be on time. It is most unusual for JL to run late, as evidenced by a year between entries here (although some may have been missed).

Along with arch competitor NH, JL is one of the most punctual worldwide airlines.

However on Saturday 26 January, JL771 (B789 JA863J, the 1855 hours NRT - SYD) did not take off until 2314 hours. SYD arrival was at 1013 hours, 213 minutes late.

JL772 has therefore been delayed, with this 0915 hours SYD - NRT still not having taken off by 1213.

I’m on JL773 at the moment. We’re returning to NRT with a scheduled arrival time of 15:55, just under five hours after our originally scheduled departure time. No word as yet on our alternative flight to MEL.

Many thanks. Only some of the flight tracking websites have picked up your diversion to point of origin (NRT).

Have staff given a reason (or have you gleaned it from other passengers?)

You are most unlucky as this is the third JL instance of late flights to or from Oz in the past day. Extremely unusual, but we all know what bad luck comes in.

Please keep us informed as to any freebie meals, accommodation (including name and location of hotel)and transfers you receive, or snacks. This information is gold as it gives us all an opportunity to discern which airlines treat passengers like kings, and which don't, when IRROPS occur.

With a storm (including gusty winds) affecting part of Melbourne, though not the intensity seen recently in Sydney, the Sunday 24 March 2019 JL773(B788 JA845J) from NRT to MEL, the 1100 hours in the air at 1133 is arriving at about 2335, half an hour behind.

On Monday 9th of September, the usually punctual JL773 NRT-MEL has been cancelled today due to incoming typhoon. As a result, the return leg as JL774, the red eye service was also cancelled.

It continues to be unusual for JL to feature in delay threads. On a rainy Sydney Tuesday 17 September 2019 - the first substantial rain for quite a while - JL772, the 0815 hours SYD - NRT (B789 JA866j) was not in the sky until 0906. Expected arrival is 1735, half an hour late.

Saturday 12th of October sees due to Typhoon Hagibis, JL772 SYD-NRT, JL774 MEL-NRT are cancelled.
JL772 is also cancelled for Sunday 13th.

JL771 (and thus 772) 2 hours late into SYD this morning, due to aircraft arriving late in NRT. Aircraft was late as JL408, FRA-NRT, diverted via HEL.

During coronavirus, Japanese carrier NH has been operating a typical three nights a week to and from Sydney, but this hasn't been the case for JL.

On Sunday 2 August 2020, JL52, an 0815 hours from SYD up to NRT has been cancelled.

One I omitted yesterday - apologies - was that on Monday 18 January 2021, JL51, the 0630 hours scheduled SYD arrival overnight from HND was cancelled during coronavirus. Sydney has had its weekly cap on international passenger arrivals lowered to (IIRC) 1505 persons per week so this may be why the flight got the flick.

It is unusual for Japan Airlines to run late ex Australia but on Thursday 14 April 2022, the morning 0815 hours SYD - HND JL52 (B788 JA837J) is expected to depart 45 minutes tardy.

On Easter Monday, 18 April 2022, the overnight JL51 (B788 JL836J) is expected to arrive SYD at 0725 hours, an hour behind after originating at HND.

Very unusual for JL to cancel an ex-Oz flight but on Monday 2 May 2022, JL776, the morning 0800 hours MEL up to NRT is to incur that fate.
