I've just been notified by my TA that JAL taxes for my flight in May next year have soared from $1327pp to $2269! Suggestion is that I should wait until closer to the time to be ticketed as taxes may come down again. Any suggestions?

that doesn't sound right, can you tell me the route you're flying and i'll check the taxes in Galileo to confirm for you.

I suspect if yr paying taxes/fuel surcharges in Yen (or most other currencies) converted back to Aussie $ the charges would have gone up considerably in the past month

Actually I just sold in a seat in Gal SYD-NRT-LON vv. and to my surprise your agent is spot on....which is shocking.

I would be looking for alternate flights if I were you.

How can they justify fuel surcharges of that proportion? Even taking into consideration the depreciation of the A$ there is also a hint of a fuel surcharge increase in that quote even though the price of crude oil has more than halved in the past few months....

One just hopes this airlines wake up to the fact that they are getting no pax ex-Australia and start adjusting fuel surcharges accordingly.

SQ have "decreased" their fuel charges ever so slightly (in USD terms) which means that in AUD terms it is now $960 in +++'s to travel to Europe.

frigg$#n ridiculous, and it so obvious what is happening here, because of AUD's correlation to commodity prices (and oil prices) surcharges should at least stay constant in AUD terms. You'll find that QF are OK, because ex-AUS issued tickets have surcharges in AUD.

Glad - well not really -:( to hear that I was getting the right info. The JAL tickets are still a reasonable price because of the companion deal I negotiated. The flight is Syd/Narita/LHR and I like it as it has an afternoon departure, a really easy o/night stay at Narita, good hotel, very close to airport, no lugggage to haul through customs plus transfers, all inclusive in the fare. Leaves Narita lunchtime and arrives late afternoon in London. It's a leisure trip, 6 weeks, so we don't mind the o/night stay.

Anyone have any thoughts on further rises by April?

Lots of things can happen between now and April. However based on JAL's published methods for calculating surcharges, (see JAL International Flights - Fuel Surcharge), the surcharge that took effect Oct 1 was based on prices May-July.

Early Nov was scehduled to be the announcement of the next revision in fuel surcharges (for ticketing Jan-Mar), and given this is supposed to be on prices Aug-Oct, then I would have expected them to come down a little. Hopefully it was not thisadjustment that you were notified of!
Exchange rates are a problem!
