Hi All,

Planning a LONE4 for December/January, and have a few questions for the crew here. I've done a couple of RTWs but this is the first since joining AFF. The expertise I've already been able to put into practice since joining is amazing - I'm hoping this will continue!

First of all, this is the planned route:
per-hkg-khh-nrt-lax-<surface>-slc-dfw-mco-<surface>-bos-lhr-hel-fra-hkg-akl-wlg-mel-per

Also worth noting is that I'm a NB with QP membership. Obviously I prefer QF, BA and AA flights for lounge access, but not essential.

1. I've been using the OW planner, but FRA-HKG-AKL causes issues. Mileage Monkey is kinder however, saying it's a valid routing. Has anyone done this route successfully as part of a xONEx?

2. I would like to break the trip up by stopping at HKG on the way to AKL to give me a second trip to NZ later in 2011. I understand this isn't allowed due to it being a second stop in Asia. My next best option then is to stop in AKL and catch JQ or other sale fares back to PER. Can anyone see a better (cheaper) option than this to come back to PER before going to NZ?

3. My gf will be joining me for the first part of the trip: per-hkg-khh-nrt, then nrt-hkg-per to get home. We'll be paying for his with a combination of QF award fights and a couple of one way purchases. At the moment, this is what I have:
PER-HKG (QF) - 30000pts
HKG-KHH (KA) - about $240
KHH-NRT (JL) - ???
NRT-HKG (CX) - 20000pts
HKG-PER (QF) - 30000pts
The issue here is the KHH-NRT leg on JAL - trying to get prices out of them at the moment is a pain. With all the problems going on, will bookings almost a year out be available online? Or is my other option to go to an agent to book just this leg? Qantas don't have KHH on their online booking tool.

4. The routing above will make use of some of my QFF points at a burn rate of about 5cpp. Are there any other easy to book routings that would be cheaper/better value, and also valid for my RTW? I tried PER-NRT-TPE-NRT-PER but award availability was basically nil.

5. What should I book first - the reward flights for gf, then my RTW, or the other way around? Obviously my intention is for us to be on the same flight.

6. I've been a bit out of the loop on the best current places to start a RTW from. Are there any countries through which I'm travelling which would have significant fare savings, or would it not be worth it? This would probably affect the questions already posed, so this is not a priority.

7. Just musing, what are the chances of JAL not flying in late December? If JAL was not flying, how would this affect current bookings? Would other OW carriers pick up the slack and fly pax on current JAL legs, or would pax have to be rerouted (and at whose expense)

Thanks to all in anticipation. My apologies for so many long winded questions!

just on the JAL question-they will be cutting unprofitable routes and I would think KHH is a candidate to be dropped-maybe that is why it is not being quoted.Even before the bankruptcy was thought of they were planning major route cuts.

That's good to know drron. Maybe I might have better luck flying hkg-tpe-nrt instead, and getting the high speed train down to khh and return. I was planning to do this anyway, but starting from khh.

Thanks for the heads up - I'll keep an eye on what happens

Re: #1

CX do Frankfurt-HKG so should be viable, but it doesnt go every single day iirc. Just check www.cathaypacific.com to check which days it goes. Also, there are often options ex-MUC

An alternative of course is to book it with an a/c change in SIN so Frankfurt-(SIN)-HKG.

Frankfurt-SIN would be QF and CX for SIN-HKG.

Re: #5 - in the scheme of things, it might be worth paying the 2500 for the phone booking fee to make sure you are on the same flights. I guess the alternative is two computers running at the same time.......

Also, could you change routing to LHR-FRA-HEL-HKG as finnair go 6/week HEL-HKG. Alternative is LHR-HEL-FRA-HEL-HKG.

thanks for that docjames - some good ideas there. I actually need to get somewhere in Austria, so a LHR-VIE-HEL-HKG would be ideal. FRA was really just a way to get back to HKG via QF with lounge access, but would mean extra surface travel time wasted that I can't really afford. VIE will get me close to where I need to be, and the fat that there is a HEL-HKG service will help.

There's often plenty of options from MUC (Munich) too that might be worth a look.

indeed docjames, MUC would be a good option instead of VIE if it's closer to where I need to be. Which means LHR-MUC-HEL. Maybe I should look up my friends adress rather than guessing!

Also, would anyone know if flying into LGW and out out LHR means an extra surface leg, or do they fit under the xONEx rules as a general into/ex LON?

Unfortunately, from what I have read in the past (no personal experience) I think that counts as a segment. :(

I think that counts as a segment. :(

Ouch. Mileage Monkey seems ok with it, but I guess I will really only find out when I book.

The reaon I ask is that I found I could squeeze a cheeky trip to BGI and the Mt Gay Rum Distillery, between JFK and LON. Only issue is that BA only fly BGI-LGW, not LHR.

Can extra segments still be purchased? I'm thinking an extra $200 or so might be worth it. Curse surface legs counting towards the 16!

From memory, 2 extra segements can be purchased within a continent (so in theory you could exceed the limit of 4 in Asia or Europe etc.) but the overall total cannot exceed 16.

Actually I just checked and my memory was correct.

At the bottom of this page there are general T&Cs summarised for a OWE, and near the 'Fare Estimate' there is a link to download the full set of rules. This may help your planning.

For the last ~2½ years or so, surface segments have counted against your maximum segments (currently 16 [it was 20]). Before that they did not.

Note - surface segments do not count against your continental limit. (so ORD-FCO-LHR,LGW-DBV-LGW,LHR-FRA,LHR-SIN would use 6 segments of the overall 16 but still use just the four allowed EUR flight segments.

Good to know serfty.

This might mean I forego the LHR-VIE(or MUC) leg with on the LONE4 and just pay for it with points. This will give me LGW-VIE surface which will bring me back to 16 segments.

It looks like this is going to be a complicated trip to organise, but hey, isn't that why we're all on this forum - for the love of travel?

Now I'm looking at
per-hkg-tpe-nrt-lax-<surface1>-slc-ord-mco-<surface2>-jfk-bgi-lgw-<surface3>-vie-hel-hkg-akl-mel-per, with <surface3> being lhr-bfs-lhr-vie on points.

Is there any way to put surface segmets into Mileage Monkey? Or ay other online tool that allows this?

Also, consider the train for intra-europe. No hassle compared to getting to/from airports. And factor in costs getting to/from each airport, as well as time.

Some friends recently did Vienna-Munich and it was a breeze. Not worth wasting points for an intra-europe flight unless you get one that's really good value.

Genius! That makes me feel much better about validity.

I will check out the trains as suggested. Would definitely be an option, as long as I can fit it into the schedule. Time will be a issue, so researching all options makes sense. I probably get caught up in how to burn all these points I've been saving.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
