Is this points upgrade to business a good deal?

Hi,

I'm taking an economy flight from Canberra - Adelaide next month and Qantas has offered me an upgrade to Business for 35,000 points one way (includes the other passenger on my booking).
Is this good value points wise? I haven't gone ahead with a upgrade offer before.

Any feedback would be appreciated :)

Way too many points for me. Ah. 2 people. I was going to say ADL - Syd is normally around 15-17,000 for one person. Sometimes worth it after a long work day with people.

Welcome to AFF!

Only you can really decide what the points are worth to you. However I think that's a little on the high side as a classic award is 24k (per person) on that route. But I already have lounge access and am okay with slumming it in Y for a couple hours.

For 2 people, I would take it if i was in your shoes, (assuming I or you in this case haven't got anything big planned).
If I was a travelling party of 1, I would do it for 12,000, but not 35,000.
Canberra Airport is quite nice, as its quite a newish place, I have been into the QF CBR QP though but not yet the QF CBR J lounge.
J seat/booking gives access to the J lounge as it is, this is a plus/asset in my point of view.

It's enough points to go more than halfway to Singapore in business class classic awards.....

I recommend accepting the offer in two instances:

1. You have so many points you could never possibly use them.
2. Points have no value to you and you have no future travel plans that could use them.

Otherwise.... not worth it for a 1 hour 20 minute flight in which you'll be dished up an overcooked rock-hard and dry toasted sandwich with a glass of wine that retails for $10 a bottle on epiQure.

Completely agree.

Welcome to AFF. Personally I'd save the points for a longer flight or an OS flight or upgrade

Welcome to AFF gonecountry.

I'g agree with other posters. Save the points for something worthwhile if you are not points rich.

Just as an idea 35,000 QFF points is enough for one way economy award SYD-HKG on QF747 and then HKG-BKK on EK A380. And as mentioned is more than half of what is required for a one way business award to SouthEast Asia.

We upgraded from PE to Business for 30K points each NRT-SYD (9 hours).

Thanks everyone. I don't think I'll upgrade for this short flight. Appreciate all the replies :)

You may get 'bid to upgrade' offer - if so, and the points are fairly low, I would bid almost the lowest points and cash and see what happens. I bid 3000 points and $100 for an upgrade CBR - MEL the other month and it was accepted; usually don't bother on such a short flight but it was a nice way to start a holiday.

Poochie, the J lounge in CBR is good but not a lot better than the QP one - there is Molton Brown in the bathroom and marginally better food but I find the QP is really good there anyway. (Helps that it is fairly new)

We did one the other week from SYD-MEL which I wouldn't normally do. I bid 5000 points and $50 each and it was accepted.

I'll bid lower next time :!: :D

I have got a bucket list, to try to visit at least once, a QP as well as an int QFd/QFi J/F lounge in all capital cities in Aust and NZ.
Have done visits to many lounges now, thanks to the tips on here and the urge of a nutty pooch brain.
QFd BNEd lounge next, then QFd PER J lounge, maybe DRW and then HBA/LST/OOLd in the next year or two.

I placed a bid upgrade last night (first time I've done it)
I went with the lowest option - 6,000 points plus $350 (total for both passengers). Probably won't get it but worth a try.

Every time I've flown that leg it's been a 737 so J is not a separate cabin, just the first few rows. Agree with Muppet above. It depends on whether you value the points or not - and how many more you have left.
