I am almost at Platinum level and was considerinng taking an extra flight to achieve platinum status. but from this it looks like there is no real benefit over gold membership. Is that the case, would I be wasting my points jusdt taking an extra flight to achieve Platiunum?

Thanks for any advice, Andrew

If it helps 99 pc of my travel is domestic, but every couple of years we head abroad for a holiday.

Depends on how much you value the extra points earn, access to the F lounge and J dom lounges etc?

Getting WP meand you are WP for the next full cycle and you THEN drop to SG after that. Basically it is one years free club membership. In $$ terms that is, depending on what sort of corporate plan you are on, about $200-400 savings.

On top of that you have the usual perks of being a WP which includes better access to seats, preferred treatment in regards to upgrades, better hotels to stay in if there is a stuff up and a flight is delayed (my LON-MEL flight was delayed overnight in Sept 2011 and I was put in the Heathrow T5 Sofitel while everyone else was sent to the Park).

And dont forget that you get those nifty WP tags to give yourself that little ego boost. :)

Also, if you get to WP, quickly log onto the Velocity program and get them to status match you to their Platinum program.

There are heaps of other small perks but i guess the biggest ones for me is the free lounge access for the extra year and access to the better lounges.

Regards
Daniel

The Virgin status match finished a week ago, so I am afraid you have missed the boat there

I also don't think that anytime access has actually gone given I flashed my expired card yesterday and was let in... And no one has checked that I am flying in months!

you must have been in hiding then as it was plastered everywhere (not just here either!)

Don't mention the war! I mentioned it once and got severely bashed. Or in the words of a senior NCO - got 10 slaps on [self redacted, before I wrote it even]

How many SC's do you need to hit WP? If you needed only like 10SC's then it would be a no brainer for me.
If you needed a few hundred then that would be a different story.

take that 1 flight and go platinum :)

I would kill, (figuraretively speaking) to be a platinum member and get access to the F lounges, which are above and beyond. And the oneworld priveleges for platinum members is out of this world (no pun intended).

plus only some Business lounges have showers whereas F lounge always have showers, free 30minute-1 hour massages and if you didn't like how busy the business lounge is, you can move to F where it is more exclusive.

Just after I made this post I flew a couple of return legs with Virgin.

On one of the flights the airline hostess announced that the Status Match program was active. I questioned her about it and she told me that she had seen it in an email that morning.

I rang the velocity help desk, who told me to send in my details and so on. I got an automated reply saying that the Status Match offer had ended. but to my surprise the announcement on the plane has been honoured! :D

Now I have just made WP with Qantas and attained SG with Virgin.

This is great because it gives me a much better opportunity to compare both programs.

Two (and a bit) years of free membership surely - one year (plus whatever of your status credits year you have left) at Platinum, plus the next year at Gold if you don't requalify.

Do you really only get busted back to SG if you fail to requalify as WP? Even with minimal flying? I thought it would be straight back to PS.

I cracked WP for the first time a month ago just after I received my SG renewal pack in the mail. Since then I've not heard boo about my WP, no email, no letter, no card, no bag tags. The only way I know I'm WP is that it says so in my profile.

I know Q has other things on its corporate mind at present but it does make me wonder.

Yes you get a soft landing.

Sometimes a very welcome holding pattern. They've rolled over my WP status after failing to qualify....very nice surprise that kept me a very happy QFF :D

I don't know how Golds get treated but sometimes I have to say that the treatment I receive make Platinum feel worth it.

I was on the last BNE-SYD flight last night and got to the airport late-ish and was very tired I was almost falling asleep. I asked at business class check-in if they were flow forwarding and it appeared that they were not on the day. Check-in agent asked me to hold on a minute and left the check-in area to go to her supervisor. Came out a minute or so later with a nod of the head.

She put me on the earlier flight (with 4D to boot on a 734) and would have put me on the flight that was leaving in 15-20 minutes if I did not have luggage to check-in.

Not sure if I would have received that sort of treatment as a Gold but to me it was important. Sometimes the little things matter more.

FWIW go into SYD at ~9:30pm and walked into the Qantas Lounge with no one at the door and then walked over to the business lounge and again no one at the door. ;)
