Is P1 worth a 213SC run?

Coming to the QFF anniversary period and have found myself within touching distance of P1. Unfortunately had a recent business trip cancelled that will see me fall 213 SCs short of P1. Normally I wouldn't even consider it however, due to unforeseen circumstances, SWMBO and I are now trying to plan 2 x 280K Oneworld awards in September and I am intrigued by the P1 access to additional classic reward seats. Anticipated routing would be SYD>NRT>LHR>JFK>LAX>HKG>SIN>SYD - trying to avoid the most popular routes in exchange for availability.

My question to the collective knowledge base here;

  • Is the P1 access to additional award seats likely to benefit us, or does it not particularly help on the Oneworld Award we are after?
  • Is it worth forking out for a 213 SC run? Bearing in mind the additional P1 privileges are not of particular benefit given SWMBO usually travels with me and I don't fly routes or classes with any op-up or upgrades through points/cash available.
  • And if so, any hot tips for Ex-Mel, or Ex-Syd to align with a current trip?

Thanks in advance.

Definitely.

I wrote about what I was given in my one year of P1 and I think I got a good deal of value. I had a bigger leap to get there then you, and if I was only 213SC short I would definitely be planning a side trip to achieve it again.

If you're that close them yes go for it. Especially if you've not yet obtained LTG.

Sydney to Narita and back on Jetstar Business Max will get you over the line (240SC).

ohhhh yeah its worth it. It should be against the rules of AFF if you don't

Depends!

If you can accumulate sufficient points, or can afford to fly Dom J or Int F - it's a NO. If you're reliant on status to provide benefits - it's a yes.

No question, if the 213 SC is affordable then yes. Soft fall to WP alone would make it worthwhile.
Personally speaking I wouldn't hesitate.

I wouldn't hesitate. But I wouldn't set foot on a Jetstar aircraft to do it either.

Aust to NZ in EK F with a QF flight number, if you are based on the east coast. 120 SC x 2 = 240. Aud$2900 or so, roughly. $12.08 per SC.
Even Aust (SA) to east coast in J and then J across to NZ will net 240.
Better still, J if you can afford it, from Aust west coast to SYD/MEL/BNE, then J to NZ.
JQ J to Japan as mentioned above is appropriate if you have the time, depending on when your QF FF anniversary date and month is.

A unanimous yes!

Thank you brainstrust, the search for the SC run begins.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I will say NO. Just to be difficult.

And I agree with juddles. Because we WPs need to stick together. :) But I'm surprised at the (almost) unanimity of the responses. I follow the 'Platinum One Experiences thread' to see if it might be worth my making the effort (I currently split travel between QF and AC to Nth America) and I haven't seen any compelling arguments.

But I guess in the OP's case its a low hurdle to get there now, so 'might as well'.

Hi, I just got my new renewed Platinum card for the next year, even though my membership year only ends at 31/3. Is this the supposed Freebie, as at the moment I am still short of the 1,200??

Hi pauleg,

Are you likely to hit WP without the need for the freebie? If so, I'd call QFF and discuss; general consensus seems to be that you only get one "get out of jail free card" and you wouldn't want QFF to waste that for you!

"A unanimous yes", BJ (... before Juddles) .. but for the OP reasons??

I've not been following the P1 thread so excuse my asking: do P1s have greater sway than WPs with the release of J reward inventory? You state your proposed routing is more to overcome scarce QF availability (notably trans-PAC and Kangaroo Route), I can't imagine P1 would be able to sway BA or CX to open up on those routes, so it's really back to QF to provide the alternative - or "originally desired".

I *can* imagine P1 could provide greater "insurance" in the unlikely event of IRROPs ... but again only with QF since OW don't have an equivalent status, again WP would suffice, no?

I had 2,400 SCs last year and saw no reason whatsoever to go for Platinum One.

But as you said if close then would be worth it just for the guarantee of another year of Platinum.
