Not happy Jan! Still, AA points are still so much more valuable than anything locally *cough Qantas Frequent Failure Points*

Especially as I am about to book a business ticket from IST-SYD on MH using AA miles..sucks big time! Booked SYD-CDG on MH 3 weeks ago and only $70 in fee's! Maybe I will try and get CX CDG-SYD Instead!

Not sure why we have to have something local when alliances are global, SQ for example is a viable option, US air and LM have local partners, Asia Miles, MH all fly here.

Well this sucks. I have lots of miles to use but unfortunately no scope to be able to use them in the near (i.e. bookable) future. I somewhat regret my investment now...oh well...

Just put an award on hold to ticket tomorrow (no choice, need to wait for the Australian office to open to ticket it). Hopefully it won't be too late and/or they recalculate the taxes.

Indeed there are many non local FFPs offering viable alternatives. The fact that most Australians subscribe to QFF and VFF is obvious, but for those that are aware and able to take advantage of programs like AA is (was) to their advantage.

I have invested heavily in QFF and AA, but have also diversified into VA, USDM and Avianca/Taca LM. But it still doesn't distract from the unfortunate fact of AA's purported award redemption enhancement.

Well originally the AA promo this month was looking tempting. Now this is happening there is no way I will buy any AA miles!

Hard to disagree that if its a straight QF/AA comparison AA wins hands down even with the surcharge. Though I bet I get a few more agreeing with me now on the view that I hope the US/AA merger doesn't go ahead.

I am about to board a LHR-bound CX flight on AA miles which I had to reticket on the 27th. The agent mentioned nothing about this so I guess it was a surprise to staff to. I am certainly glad I didn't wait until I reached London to do it or it would have cost me more in fuel surcharge than it did ti upgrade from J to F!

Just put through a held booking I had which had both AA domestic F sectors and a QF international J sector on it. No YQ levied on mine thankfully (it has been ticketed but I still need to pay for the cash component; apparently there's a bit more of an extensive process required if you're not a resident of the US).

Word has it that it was all a false alarm.

Lay down thy arms, my fellow countrymen.

Or a corporate back down.... Aren't there reports of a memo sent to staff that two different agents confirmed?

Was never meant to apply to award tickets.

AA adds fuel surcharges on some international awards? [NO] - Page 11 - FlyerTalk Forums

Confirming the reports shared by linglingfool and incognitoMD, here's the latest update on the issue being discussed within this thread.

Last night, in a routine effort to better align American to industry standards with other global carriers, American began collecting carrier-imposed surcharges on tickets for travel on other carrier’s metal. This change was intended for revenue tickets only, but the surcharge was erroneously added to AAdvantage award redemptions on other airlines as well. Except in the cases of British Airways and Iberia (where American currently collects these surcharges), no carrier-imposed surcharges will be applied when redeeming AAdvantage miles for award travel on other carriers. Any customers who encountered this fee in error will be fully refunded.

The statement from AA does, however, suggest the days of ticketing oneworld Explorer and similar oneworld products through AA in order to avoid fuel fines may well be over.

Good point on that one!
