Hi all
i just updated the iPhone app for AFF and saw the footprints option (where you can track your location and that of others).
Although this is neat I just wanted to flag that the addresses provided are very specific even to the house number on your street - something of a privacy concern for some perhaps...
Any thoughts?

I just loaded it up too. It wasnt very specific in my test location. Is it only iphone users that can use the application?

I've been waiting for this. :D

While it's specific, you don't need to 'check-in' your address at home. And if you do accidentally do so, you can go to your profile and easily delete past footprints.

The purpose isn't to find your home, but you're welcome to see mine. ;)

It helps if you use the Footprints to locate yourself before inserting a map link into a post, but obviously it would use GPS first, and if you don't have that, then whatever else it can.

That is correct however there are several considerations IMHO.

  1. You do not have to include the address. ie it is totally optional.
  2. Who is to know if your location is your house or somewhere you are visiting :?:
  3. If you use the function and someone does establish a particular location as your house and then later on sees you are away from home, how are they to know who else may be at home, what security system you may or may not have and/or how many guard dogs, cats or gold fish you may have :?:

Did I send this from my PC, my laptop or my iPhone or all three :?:
Is the address my home or just just where I am at the moment :?:

Hmm not 100% convinced I even want people knowing my office location

I'm pretty sure it's not even meant for that.

The idea is for meets and TR's to show where you are. You're reading too much into it, and of course, don't even have to check-in in the first place.

Is your office in the phone book :?:

.... and as I said you have to actively select and activate the settings for the footprint to work.

Or even the house you happen to be walking past at that time?
:-|

As you will soon find out, by default no location is shared, each post you make doesn’t include an address, and the process to register an address includes 3 clicks… if you somehow managed to post your address after all that but didn’t want to, posting your address would seemingly be the least of your worries :p

And of course, all "footprints" can be deleted from your profile at any time.

Thank you for the explanation. I was actually replying to another post and the issue raised in that post. I wasn't actually raising a concern myself. I wasn't talking about posting my address.

For an additional explanation, please see the Annopuncement HERE.

I know, I just think the question is going to come up multiple times, and try as I might, a clear post that works for everyone has so far been hard to do. Maybe admin’s post will be clearer though. Wasn’t attacking you though

Sorry yes I realise it wasn't an attack. I just wasn't sure if my post was clear when I reread it.

Hi all

Apologies for not coming back to this sooner - last week was a shocker (again :( ). I wasnt trying to stir the pot or make things out to be some for m of stalkerism - was just genuinely surprised at the level of detail in the footprints that I saw.

Good to see the privacy point in Admin's post and also good to see the notes on ho to use it effectively.

I might actually use this myself on future trips...

In testing there was some talk of making it more ambiguous, but for whatever reason it wasn’t done. I’d guess the members that are private would never use it no matter what, and the ones that are less so will make sure they don’t post the wrong location ;)

I used it in Queenstown and found it great fun, adding dots around the town, and later the South Island on my journey. Of course, no one is ever nearby :(

One thing I've noticed is a small spelling error. The message when locating position has position spelt as "positiong".

I think I'm doing something wrong. I see posts like this one http://www.australianfrequentflyer....ly-off-topic-thread-6220-1036.html#post394067
that include a map, which I assume is the footprint. This even shows in the forum when viewed from a computer. However, I don't see a similar map in my posts where I include a footprint, e.g. http://www.australianfrequentflyer....-rising-brisbane-cbd-27519-12.html#post393763. But I can see my footprints when I check them in the iphone app.

Is there another setting that I need to change? or something?

I think your settings are correct. But when you create the post (on your iPhone) be sure to use the "Insert" and then the "Send" buttons on the top right of the screen.

When you click on the Footprints tab, and locate yourself to leave a footprint, that’s when one is left.

When you reply to a thread and insert a map location, I don’t think that’s the same as leaving a footprint, but shows where you are so long as your location can be found.

The app doesn’t automatically "footprint" you every time you post from it. Although I see there is a setting for that, I’ve just never turned it on.
