I've been looking at some flights to LA with both Virgin & Qantas (as gold with both) and Virgin looks much better value..

Does anybody know if I upgrade to J using points as a gold, would the upgrade be void if I dropped to Silver before the flight? Since upgrading on long haul is a gold+Plat exclusive benefit.

Not sure I'll manage to maintain gold since I'm booking with QF more often now but this could be a deciding factor...

:)

T&C's show that as Gold you can redeem for upgrades and makes no reference to the status at time of travel.

It would seem the ability to upgrade is a benefit ofthatGold status and is the determining factor.

I really cannot see VA cancelling upgrades based on status at a future point in time.

Just my thoughts but you may wish to confirm with VA

Do the upgrade before you drop to silver and you will be OK ...

You get issued a new e-ticket in a new class of travel, as long as you don't need to change anything (which is a general rule before doing a points upgrade anyway, as changing things is a nightmare) then you should remain "OK to fly"

My understanding/opinion and interpretation of the conditions is the benefit limited to WP/SG is the ability to upgrade a flight, not the ability to fly on an upgraded fare (e.g. I could book a flight for me and another person without status, and upgrade both of us)

So you should (IMHO) be fine - go for it before the upgrade seat disappears! :)
