Sriwijaya Air flight SJ182 missing

An Indonesian passenger plane has gone missing just minutes after taking off from the country’s capital city of Jakarta.

Sriwijaya Air flight SJ182 dropped over 3000 metres in altitude in less than 60 seconds and just four minutes after taking off, according to data reported by @flightradar24.

The flight was being operated on a 26-year-old Boeing 737-500. The number of passengers on board is unknown.

More to come.

The 737-500 series is a classic old body and incidentally one series that I have never flown. As previously mentioned it is quite aged at 26 years.

The Germans have done a great job remodelling Garuda in the last 20 years. There was a service agreement between Garuda and Sriwijaya Air (Indonesia's third-largest carrier) however it was terminated in 2019 for alleged non-payment. Too early to speculate, however this incident is by far the most serious to inflict the airline to date, with four previous incidents that did not involve direct fatalities.

The year has not started well for Sriwijaya Air nor Boeing.

Oh how sad and terrifying for those on board.

I can't imagine what the families are going through. Hopefully the reasons for the accident are found swiftly.

And this tweet from FlightRadar24:

My thoughts are with the 56 passengers and 6 crew, at this point it is looking all but certain that this was a crash event, with a source in Bahasa quoted in Wikipedia (Sriwijaya Air Flight 182 - Wikipedia) already calling this a crash event and noting that a crash site has been identified.

There is no information on this accident. ASN, AVHerald, and prune are full of gibberish.

Brand new aircraft are just as easy to crash as older ones.
Very true look at the 737 Max...

More to 26 years old is the structure of the plane still airworthy or would it be a huge maintenance bill and did they cut corners to stay in the air???

Given Indonesia doesn't have a great regulatory history and the airline was struggling big time financially, it's probably a fair point of speculation. But that's all it is unfortunately. Details seem to be extremely scant, save for the FR24 data (which may not be totally reliable anyway).

The age of the structure, per se, means very little. Number of cycles is far more important, and it's likely to have been a reasonably high number.

But, there is absolutely no information, as yet, to give any indication of what happened.

And, there are some B737s that are still carrying passengers after more than 40 years.

“... Focusing on regular commercial aircraft, there are several Boeing 737-200s that are in operation ferrying passengers. Nolinor, a Canadian charter airline, flies C-GNLK and C-GNLE. The former is 46-years-old while the latter clocks in at 45-years-old. At 42-years-old, Air Inuit has C-GMAI, and Venezolana has YV502T ...”

Radar shows IMC however no severe CBs or anything.

Which is odd as they basically dropped like a rock. Wasn’t anything really leading up the drop off either, normal climb then bang, she went down. It’s like a part has fallen off or something. She went down and it seems to be basically instantly.

AV anything to add around some of the data we have seen? Such a instant drop any ideas?
